Im about to pull my hair out

I might be an idiot. But I bought a dime bucker for my SSS strat. I used to have a hot rails but it was way too mid rangy. Along with the pick up I pick up a new 500k volume pot because my old 1000k one was scratchy. I cut out my face plate wire it up and plug it in. It sounds fine. Except my volume pot acts like a tone knob. After hours of looking at wiring diagrams and soldering to no avail I come to the conclusion that I maybe bought a defective pot. Throw my old dirty one in and there we go. Go to the shop the next day and by a 250k pot ( I know humbuckers like 500k ) but I was told that the 1000k one was muddying up my singlecoils. Well this is where Im going crazy. First off, I think I might of messed up a ground beause there is a loud buzz that stops when I touch the strings and the 2nd most annoying thing is that with this new 250k pot clean sounds "ok" but distortion is complete crap, its really harsh and I get this sorta crackling sound when I strum hard. Is it the 250k pot, could it be some bad solder points, is it a bad ground please help!!

Re: Im about to pull my hair out

* The 'buzz when you let go of the strings' is normal

* Sounds like the 'crackling noise' is due to bad wiring......check those solder points
