I'm in desperate need of advice

I tire of my modelling amp setup..even the best ones seem compressed, one dimensional and kill sustain...

so I'm looking for a small combo...possibly tube, under 5 bills. LOW wattage....5-15 watts. With a 12" speaker. British voiced. That I can run a really good Marshall type stomper through...

reccomendations on the combo? Blues Jr? PV classic? Is there anything with 6v6s? ( I prefer these over El84s). I don't mind SS too much if it will take a pedal well. Maybe a Marshall AVT with a stomper?

I'm quite fam with the Plexi-tone, but I've heard about some peds called a V-stack, and a Crunchbox or something? I'm looking for more of a JMP/800 type tone vs. a plexi, otherwise Rids box would be a no-brainer

confused and sick of his tone

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

Jeff, Do you play with a clean tone a lot? If your clean isn't pristine (think country clean), I would suggest a Crate V series either the 5 or 15 watter, good Marshally tone for not a lot of dough.

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

The Fender Pro Jr. or Blues Jr. are good amps.
I love my new purchase - a Peavey Classic 20 (have I mentioned it allready?).
Laney make some good british toned amps. Laney's have good tone but I talked to an amp tech who said that the small ones are not reliable (the HC reviews state the same).
Epiphone... really cheap, always good reviews, and you won't feel bad for modding them beyond recognition...

However,
I don't know if you can make a small amp get the tone of a big high gain amp... high wattage stacks are a big part of the deal here... the heavy metal guys might have a more educated opinion here but I talked to a friend who plays in a punk band here, they all go for solid state amps with big stacks (don't think they can afford a JCM)...

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

It's gonna be hard to find that, bro. Even a 5 watt tube amp will piss off your neighbors. :D

With that out of the way, and if you're cool with that, the Crate V Series amps are really nice. Check out their small tube combos like Joe mentioned.

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

With 6V6s you have Pignose...

Never tried them... talked to people who told me bad things about them...

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

Jeff, I would go with a Blues Jr or try to find a cheap tweed priceton or champ clone. Those aren't british voiced I know....but they will give you more grind than a BJ.

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

You HAVE to try a TECH21NYC Trademark 60.

Very tube like tones that covers the Marshall-Fender-Mesa bases.

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

marshall DSL 401 or the now-discontinued 201..

i dunno about the US but both are about in your ballpark financially here?

el84, 12-inch, 40 or 20 watt, 3 channel, etc.

good luck!

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

Get a blues JR and run a cab with it. Put a really nice pedal infront of it.

Nice quiet setup, can't exactly go hi-gain but if that's not your bag I guess you'll be fine.

I've heard great things about those. I never tried one, but PM John Wymore. I believe he is a Tech 21 dealer and can give you the lowdown.

Re: I'm in desperate need of advice

Hey everyone. Thanks for all the suggestions...
I'm really looking though for the pedal to be the gain channel, and the tube amp to add some warmth: not to drive the crap out of the tube amp. Rids Plexitone into my Rivera was awesome and thats kind of what I was looking for, but more a JMP/800 sound rather than a plexi.

I had forgotten abut the Crate V series 30ws. And I'd def like to TRY a 60w Tech21 combo, if I could FIND one. I ran a sansamp (original) through a Fender Princeton for a few year as my bedroom rig, and it gave up some great tone.

I've done a little research and seen that a BBE Sonic Maximizer through the loop of a modeller will do wonders for them...anyone tried that?

In that case I'd look into a Blues Jr and a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic. Lots of gain on tap with tube OD.
