I'm looking for a hi-gain low wattage tube amp

As seems to be the norm, I'm gravitating to a different musical tastes (but not leaving the former behind) And i want to build a good rig to play some metal with. I'm set on getting a BKP Miracle Man in my Strat, but my Traynor just isn't a hi gain amp. It's great for rock and blues don't get me wrong, but I want something that can give me closer to the power of Opeth, old school Metallica, Alice in Chains, Manson, Zakk Wylde etc...

I'm having no luck finding a low watt (10-20 watts) amp that fits this description.

Thanks for any input :headbang:

You're also coming to the same realization as many, many others: 50 watts is WIKKID LOUD!

I recommend you go with a Vox Valvetronix amp. You can get great, heavy tube crunch at reasonable volumes -- or ear-splitting volumes, if you want.

Check out Laney's AORs, talk to Pierre, he had a 30watter. I have 50 watter and if i want I can force a drummer to mic himself  But at 4 on the MV its pretty manageble(all though tone suffers a bit) you can find them for under 600$ its ECC83 with EL34 amp, how more metal can you get? Very close schematic to jcm800, only with extra gain stage and and EFX loop. Very tube senstitive, you could really create a library of different tones just by switching tubeys. Of course I am biased.

there was a thread about this before, i recommened a peters wolverine. 18w of high gain goodness

I have heard good things about that 1 watt head, I think it is a BumBox, or something.

If you want a combo for a reasonable amount of money, look at the Marshall 401's. I don't think they are made any longer, but easy to find on the 'Bay.

Another option is a 50 watt head of your choice, and a UA (Ultimate Attenuator) for playing low level gigs or around the house, etc.

im not sure about a link, i know the company is peters and the wolverine is the higher gain version, they also do a c3p1 or something silly like that which is supposed to be a lower gain amp but ive never tried that one. the wolverine is a 18w single channel head running two el84's in class a/b and its got tone baby. i think they were like $1000 new or so, ive played a few of them but never seen one for sale

I love my Mesa Subway Rocket, 20 or 22 watts (I can't remember) with a ton of gain on tap. You can get them used between $400-$500

Or you could try a high-gain pedal. I like the Boss Mega Distortion, but if you want toobs, try Damage Control.

Re: I'm looking for a hi-gain low wattage tube amp

digitech pedals are capable of running directly into a mixer...randall makes those module amps in 20 watt combos i believe.

I believe this is the site you were talking about, although I don't see any Wolverine models. In his FAQ, the builder discusses why he no longer makes low-wattage amps, and sticks to 50 watts exclusively.

Is this the brand you were referring to?
