Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Well, I finally got to take the new amp out to really crank it and get the tubes cookin'. I also got to try out the pedal I bought from B2D, a Keeley Ultra modded Boss DS-1, but I'll get to that in a second ;).

First of all, the Mesa. Wow is all I can say really. Of course the EQ settings I'd dialed in here in my room had to be tweaked some, but once I started playing with the knobs I found some great tones. The cleans continue to surprise me from this amp, very chimey and... well... clean :). BTW, I was only running a Boss TU-2, the DS-1, and the amp's reverb effects-wise. By switching to the "pushed" mode on the clean channel and adjusting the knobs I got some tasty blues lead tones, and with a little turn of the guitar's volume I could drop into a nice blues rhythm. My favorite part of the evening was the dirty channel though. I pulled everything from fusion tones, to Petrucci-ish lead sounds, to greasy haired nu-metal sounds from it with rather small adjustments. All in all I think I'm going to be very happy with this amp as I use 3 basic tones in a show: a nice clean, mid/high gain rhythm, and a thick, smooth lead tone.

That's where the DS-1 comes in. It sounds awesome in front of a clean setting, using it for the distorted tones, but what I like most so far in the small amount of time I've had to play with it, is using it to give my rhythm tones a kick in the tail to lead territory. My favorite so far is having the tone knob around 1:30, the distortion knob around 10 o'clock or so, switch down for "ultra" mode, and the level set to a nice solo boost volume. Great sustain, smooth attack, easy (yet controllable) harmonics, and very responsive to knob and pick attack adjustments.

Overall I'm extremely happy. I was getting any tones I wanted tonight with the amp and one pedal, the only thing I need now is the few modulation effects I use regularly and I'll be set. I'm going to go ahead and swap out the tubes, since it still has the original Mesa tubes in it (probably 5 years old or more).

I wish more guys would experiment with using the DS-1 for both rythym tones and lead tones...not just lead tones.

To me, that's what the DS-1 is all about! Great rythym tones tones with the guitar's volume control turned down, that morph into great lead tones when turn the volume control back up again on my guitar.

Lew, the lead tones are what I was wanting to get out of it, and I easily found those on my first night playing with it. Now I can start playing with it and tweaking all kinds of cool stuff from it, since I know I can get AT LEAST what I was looking for :). Seems to be a pretty versatile pedal from Mr. Keeley.

Glad you like the pedal!

Any chance of some sound clips of this stuff in the future?

Definitely, but most likely not for a couple months. I've been buying a lot of gear lately, and while I haven't spent all of the money I made from my rack sale I still need to calm down before I take it too far haha. Early on next year I plan on getting a mic and a small (1 or 2 channel) mixer so I can continue recording here at home.

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

I know what you mean. I've got CEP 2.0 on my comp and won't have time to record any clips til xmas vacation LOL.

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Yep, that's what I use, but I always recorded direct with the POD. Alas, now it's sold :)

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

I don't think I'll ever get rid of my POD. it's just much too useful... plus there's a slave out on the back of that Boogie, yannow. ;)

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Yeah, but I defnitely didn't need the XT Pro anymore, and if I hadn't sold it I wouldn't have been able to afford the Boogie ;).

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Yep... nothing like big ol glowin glass bottles.

Have you experimented with the Modes on the channels much? I usually keep mine on Clean for channel 1 and Modern for channel 2... it's just "MY" sound that way but the other modes offer quite a few different varieties of vintage howl and growl.

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Oh yeah, I've been constantly playing around with this thing. I put the new tubes in it last night and it even better, the cleans are much warmer and the distortion has more clarity and just sounds thicker.

I use the clean mode on the first channel, but I haven't decided which dirty mode I like best. I really like the gain voicing on vintage mode, but I've found that with the gain backed off in modern mode I can dial up a similar tone that sounds just a bit more "open". There's definitely a cornucopia of tones on tap though :).

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

What kind of tubes... if you don't mind me askin?

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

JJ/Tesla. I decided to try the high gain option from Eurotubes. ECC83SC and 6L6GC.

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

I was always under the impression that it wasn't safe to use other brands of power tubes with Boogies as the bias rating wouldn't match or something like that... is there a way to tell whats safe and whats not?

Re: Impressions of the Rectoverb and Keeley Ultra DS-1

Since Boogies are fixed bias, and a very cold bias at that, I'm pretty sure that if you stay in the same type of tube (6L6, EL34, 12AX7, etc.) that you're fine. I talked with Bob at Eurotubes, and also read all the Boogie info on his site, and he said his tubes would be plug n' play. They are a big improvement IMHO.

He even talks of using KT88 tubes in a Dual Rec in EL34 mode, if you read the Mesa info on his site there's some very interesting stuff.
