In depth EQ

In my GT-8 theres a parametric EQ I love messing with... now I have a bit of an idea of what I'm doing, but maybe some of you guys can give me some input on getting the most out of it.

Keep in mind I'm going for a Marshall/metal sound...I dont go overboard with the gain and am not after a 'modern' sound.

Its got a low cut & high cut; I usually cut off below 55hz and above 11kz. I figure those bass frequencies arent doing anything for guitar and the highs create too much 'noise' at gig volumes. Now are there any high harmonics above 11kz I'm chopping off that I should leave there?

I usually leave the bass and high settings as is because the regular preamp eq takes care of that. What I mainly use it for is shaping the mids.

There are two parametric bands you can adjust; low mids & high mids.

Now I usually set the low mids at 400hz, with a Q width of 2 (0.5 being WIDE and 16 being narrow) and gain +3. This way I thought i was getting good grunt & grind in there.

The high mids I usually set to boost at around 2kz with a width of 1 (pretty wide) because it sounds like that's where you get a good scratchy sound in the high/high mid area that really cuts through.

Now at home it sounds pretty good, but in a band situation I was finding it hard to hear myself... I have plenty of mids as the normal preamp eq is Bass:4, mids:8, treble:5.5 so there shouldnt be a problem there....

The thing about this eq is it wasnt really giving me that good punch in the guts feeling... now if I drop the low mids to around 250hz will it move more air and make my sound stand out more?? Or will it create the mud that I fear lurks in that frequency range??

Now I bet all this can be solved by the simple answer: "trust your ears", but thankyou Seymour Duncan forum for allowing me to write down my thought process, and confuse myself and everyone around me :smack:
