In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

I kinda hate to admit it but I've been lurking here for an awful long time. I've learned a lot. I've hesitated to post because I don't consider myself very knowledgeable compared to others about the subject of guitars and pickups even though I've done a lot of swapping out Pups.

I was always a Fender guy. This year when I got my yearly bonus I went to get a Gibson style guitar. I had an Epiphone Les Paul or Korina V in mind. One of the things I learned here is the issue of what seems to be mystery wood in the Epiphones. Not so keen on that, but, I figured they still get praise in general for their sound and upgradeability.

At the local Guitar Center... yeah, yeah, but I know these guys... when I was playing a few possibilities I realized that for the same money I could get a Gibson Faded SG. They let me play 4 or 5 of them, and that was the key. I found my baby on the 3rd one. The neck was thinner. The body clearly one piece of mahogany, the thin finish not hiding anything. The neck joint was a razor line, again, clearly because the thin finish hides nothing. I played in unplugged. I put my ear to it. THIS was my baby. Now I rarely touch my other electrics. They're all for sale.

I see some hating of the Faded Gibsons in here. Sorry, compared to the Epi's in the same price range, this particular example is far superior to any I tried.

I couldn't help myself and since I had a '59 neck pup on my desk, formerly in a Standard Tele with a Hot Rails - a very nice combo I should add - I did some more lurking here and paired it with '59 Bridge. I now have what I feel is a really cool Rock 'n' Roll machine for way under 600 bucks new.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Dude I know what you mean because I just bought a brand new Faded V too. Will that bad boy scream or what. You can't beat it for $600. If only they made a Faded Explorer.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Very cool, its great when you find an axe that just seems right. Now go play that thing hard for 10-15 years a she'll look the part too!
And Welcome to the Forum, get in here and share what you know :)

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Welcome aboard! Got any pics? I like the look and feel of the fadeds, but just can't get on with the balance of SG's. Shame really, cos I can't get to grips with Les Pauls either!!

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

I just bought a G400, I like it a lot, but still getting used to how SG's are... the tone is cool, what I don't like is the neck moves with any pressure at all so as I'm banging away at a chord I can almost see the string distance changing as the pressure pulls on the strings. I got to replace the pickups, they are weak.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Yeah man, welcome to the forum. We need more people with awesome taste in guitars and pickups!

Shame you're not too into your Fenders anymore though. I suggest keeping at least one. You never know how your tastes may change. Plus, if you've been lurking around here for a while, you know we are quite polygamous with our axes. :p

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

SGs are the greatest guitars ever, mine reminds me of that every day.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

+1 On the Idea of a Faded Explorer, especially if it was faded white like the Faded SG 3 Pickup.

That's how you do the vibrato-thingy with SGs. Bend the neck.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

i really dig the faded series too. i think a faded yellow Les Paul double cut with P-90's, and a faded brown V would round out my collection nicely.

As far as SG's being perfect...I pretty much agree. I went through a weird phase where, say I'd have two days off in a week, one would be spent at home writing music and jamming (using my Fenders) and the next would be at Guitar Center shuffling through all the SG's. It was like I couldn't pick one...I loved them all. Something about how they're built is just perfect for rockin, or chillin, or whatever.

When I spotted a green one on eBay called the "SG-X" I knew I found the one...

I could go on but i think i'm just gonna go play it. rock on.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Awesome topic! I'm the same way as you, I've lurked on here for a long friggin time. I still don't post much. Everyone here knows more than me.

Anyways, nice friggin score! I love SGs, and I like the faded ones too. Good stuff! Great pup combo too.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Welcome to the forums, wonko :) I'm glad you found what you wanted! I'd be glad to be sporting a faded SG myself, though I'd favour a faded V if I had teh chance. :bigok:

Don't ever be afraid to participate. If you know something, say it. If you don't know something, throw questions out there and let any of the bros with experience help you out. That's what it's like around here - and that's why it's great.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

What SG's have the thinnest necks? I like the sound of a friend's epiphone SG but the neck is a bit fat for my tastes and style. I'm thinking of getting an ESP viper, but I would like to get a gibson maybe since I already have 2 ESPs.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

Well, I have to agree with you on that Faded's are totally awesome. I was testing some ibanez and LTD stuff in the store, and then I saw the Faded V. I was thinking by myself, well let's give the weird gibson a chance. Once plugged in, I played just one E chord and I instantly knew this was the guitar for me. She really has a special kind of thing, a thing I have never heard/felt on another guitar before.

But I can also understand why people hate some of these axes, a while ago I tested a '06 Faded V in Amsterdam, and it was like total crap. Nothing like my baby. Really heavy, the fretwork was bad quality, it just didn't feel and play nice. While my 'greatest guitar ever' is a '02 faded (with crescent moon inlays and Ebony fretboard, they use rosewood now) and generally the same specs as this piece of junk it's just a total different guitar. I can't quite understand how differences can be this big. My theory was: since '03 they started to do some things different and it became junk. But I've heard great stories of fadeds after this year, so it might just depend on something else..

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

I think all guitars are hit or miss as far as quality goes. I got a satin black Gibson Fadded V for $560 that kills the $1100 standard ones I've played. And I actually love the 496r/500t pups in it as well. I'm leaving this one stock.

Re: In praise of my Faded SG, no matter what anyone says

i bet the gibson sg standards are great too
