I've been toying with the idea of getting a new acoustic for a while now... I have 2 takamine acoustics, but I"m thinking I may steer away from tak this time...

suggestions?

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

I love Taylors for more progressive designs. What are the specifics of your Taks? (I've loved all the Taks I've played, import and domestic)

price range? what do you do with it? more chording or single notes?

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

I'm in the same boat as you, and have been playing everything. I dunno what your budget is, but the best stuff I've found so far for the money are Blueridge, Yamaha, Masterbilt Epi's, an Alvarez. There are some lower end (500-900) Martins that everyone seems to like, but everyone I've played was lifelss, no feel, sounded muddy, and just overall felt like you had a gigantic pillow stuffed in the soundhole. If you can find a dealer with Blueridges though, you should try some out. Even the uber lower end ones some greatly setup, with very good features (especially for the price), and look amazing

This is of course assuming you don't have a big budget for good Taylors and such

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

I totally agree with you on the Martin front. I hate the cheap Martins, but the better ones are sweet traditional guitars. The Eric Clapton guitars are just incredible sounding.

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

I've compared alot of Martin's vs. Taylors lately and the Taylors are quickly becoming my new fav. Too bad the ones I like are always $x,xxx.xx!!!!

Check out Guild. I went out Martin and Taylor shopping and came home with a Guild, fwiw.

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

I just got back from the Newport guitar show in Miami (it used to be in Newport RI). This was an invitation only show and all the custom built guitars there were awesome....... expensive, but some of the best guitars I have ever played. There were 3 builders in particular displaying some awesome flattops. John Walker who is based in Montana, Don How based in California and Julius Borges based in Massachusetts. The Borges are the closeset thing to a pre war Martin I have ever heard and they played like butter. The Walkers were like a Santa Cruz, but built one at a time. Impeciblae detail and awesome tone. The Hows were little guitars like a Stella, but with really complex tone. I would also give a tumbs up for David Taylor out of Michigan. He sold a liitle Parlor guitar at the show to Muriel Anderson and that was one beautiful guitar. I believe I have been spoiled. I don't know if I could buy an off the shelf guitar anymore...... of course I would have to sell my house to buy one, but they were all amazing guitars.

I've been playing one of these locally at a shop, they're selling it for $650 I believe

I really like it though. They've also got some Larivee's (sp?) hanging in there that are really nice, but the one I played seemed too bassy. Breedlove and Blueridge both make really great stuff, not too sure on the Breedlove prices...I usually play it, love it and then look at the price and realize it's way out of my range :) If you have Blueridges locally definitely look into those, I really like those and the prices are good too.

Re: in the market for a new acoustic

Carvin offers great acoustic guitars. I bought a C550 (no longer made) and it sounds just like a Taylor. A whole lot cheaper in price too!
