Incoming New Amp - Citrusy Goodness

I put in an order for a used Orange OR-50 40th Anniversary head. I'll be playing it through a pair of Cannabis Rex speakers in a vertical 2x12 cab for the most part. I also have a cab loaded with 2 Emi. GB128 speakers. If I need a bigger cab, I have a 4x12 loaded with G12M70 and one Music Man speaker. Good sounding cab.

Anyone have one and care to share their thoughts?

I like the new Orange amps. The originals from the 70s were just terrible amps.

I'm really stoked to hear how it differs from my OR15. I love that amp to pieces. I also have a Dark Terror and a Micro Dark. This will be my first amp with EL34 tubes.

Re: Incoming New Amp - Citrusy Goodness

nice! i havent played through one of those but the hf drive control intrigues me

Re: Incoming New Amp - Citrusy Goodness

never met an EL34 amp I didn't like...have a feeling that's going to be a beautiful tone monster!!!!

I'm a pretty big Orange / Matamp / Green geek so here are my two cents.

The amp you bought is about as close as the modern Orange folks want to get to a vintage Orange. People like Mincer who didn't take the time to learn the FAC knob, the HF filter control and the Baxandall EQ section probably don't like old Orange / Matamp heads because of those unique controls.

The amp you're getting is essentially a tweaked 70s Orange circuit, with a Fender / Marshall / Vox (aka "normal") tone stack that just passively cuts frequencies.

It sounds great. It's not as bold and brash as a real vintage Orange / Matamp but it gets close enough, with a touch of Marshall flavor added, and it's a kickass rocknroll amp.

Not for purists like me. Not for people who need a dedicated clean or an ultra higain. Great ****in rocknroll amp tho.

^^^Nice. Having never played an old Orange, I won't know what I'm missing. LOL.

From the reviews and interviews with their designer, Adrian Emsley, it's a presence control up to 3 o'clock. After that, it injects negative feedback into the power amp to "make it really scream"

Yeah its a 70s style presence knob. My first generation model T's presence knob adds gain towards the end of the dial, too.

Re: Incoming New Amp - Citrusy Goodness

Nah, not wrong. I'd take any modern amp over an vintage Orange. They were just terrible. At the time, most musicians hated them, too.

I'm not a huge Orange fan, but those vintage amps were cool. I had a chance to play an OR120 overdrive once, and it was just amazing; the grind was just brutal with the FAC one click from farthest right. I was really hoping the OR15 would have an FAC control, and then I was really bummed when it didn't.

Those little amps scream. Its got the best overdrive I've personally ever had in an amp. Cut through a band mix really well too.

Yeah those little guys are rad. Apparently they're basically just the distortion channel from the Rockerverb line tweaked to be a tad more vintagey. The control layout isn't the same as my Greens or Matamp-built OR80 but the voicing gets reeeally close with all three EQ knobs cranked.

All of their amps are good if that 70s rock sound is your thing. You basically just decide on which feature set and power level you need and go crazy.

Yeah, I'm pretty stoked, and so is my daughter...she gets my Micro Dark to use with her guitar.

The simplicity of the UI is beautiful. I love it I bet it is going to give you years of great tone.

There are people who hate the icon only face, but I always found them to be very intuitive. I also like the larger knobs for gain and volume so they're easier to spot onstage.

Re: Incoming New Amp - Citrusy Goodness

I tried an OR15 in a store once and was liking what I was hearing. The OR series seem to be quite unique compared to other current Oranges I've tried (AD30, Thunderverb, Rockerverb, Tiny Terror etc). It was instantly warmer and smoother, less vox-like compared to other Oranges. Enjoy!
