Info on MGJ & AHIBL Humbuckers

Can anyone tell me something about Seymour Duncan humbuckers that are stamped MGJ & AHIBL on the back?

Never installed, how well will they buck the hum when used as a pair?

Re: Info on MGJ & AHIBL Humbuckers

MGJ ought to be a Mag (A5 magnet non-staggered Stag Mag,) wound by Maricela Juarez. An AH1BL is an Alnico II Pro bridge wound by someone not quite so famous. They're both at least fifteen years old from the labeling.

They will buck hum, combined series, parallel, or alone, as long as the individual coils aren't put in some out of phase combination, and as long as they're not split.

You're right, after a quick google; funny I even double checked the model name but my mind missed the 'P' in 'APH1B.'

Wow, thanks guys! That is interesting to hear that the builders of these coils attained such recognition. Good for them! Is there anywhere where I can find where these coil builder's names are indexed or credited? Maybe in some book or website?

Re: Info on MGJ & AHIBL Humbuckers

Is there a comprehensive cross reference for Seymour Duncan builder names and/or pick up model information? I can remember when I bought these pick ups there was a lengthy write-up on each of them. It would seem like someone in the company must have information on each and every pick up they have made, even the custom made ones. It would seem to be silly to constantly reinvent designs just to avoid the tedium of keeping a design log.

I contacted Arwin Hojjati in Seymour Duncan's Customer Service & Technical Support & hit pay dirt, so for anyone following this post this is for you!

For background information on their pickups first try: http://www.seymourduncan.com/faqs-categories/duncan-pickup-info Here you will find what I was looking for, namely, charts breaking down their model number nomenclature including common builder's & winder's names.

If you don't have any luck there then try Emailing their customer support at generalproductinfo@seymourduncan.com They offer a very concise & quick response (in minutes!)!!!

As far as mine go:

MGJ: Stag Mag SH-3, bobbin winder was Maricella Juarez (as the Silence Kid mentioned earlier), it employs staggered Alnico II rod magnets instead of the traditional bar magnet, for Strat tone when split. It offers a high output with a DC resistance of 16.6 Kohms. You can find more details about this, including sound files of it being played here: http://www.seymourduncan.com/pickup/stag-mag This was originally advertised to duplicate the strat single pickup sound when coil tapped & it duplicates a strat's magnets staggered height. It is a four conductor pickup intended to be used as a neck pick up but could be also used in the bridge position.

The AH Metal Fatigue (AH1BL) was a custom designed Allen Holdsworth model that offered a high output (DC resistance: 16.8 Kohms) "fusion" sound. Mine uses an Alnico V magnet, 4 conductor (single optional), humbucker (trembucker optional), vintage (long) legs (short optional). The "1B" or "IB" in the model name indicates a metal cover, although I opted not to have one in order to match my other pickup. This pick up was meant to be played in any position, neck, bridge, or both. The "L" in the name refers to the bobbin winder named Lidia Daniel. You can find more information on this here: http://customshop.seymourduncan.com/ah-metal-fatigue/

Thanks again, Silence Kid, Rand-O-Monium, darthphineas, & of course Arwin Hojjati in Seymour Duncan's customer support!!! Go Duncan!!!
