well i found out that my pops already has my graduation present and it happens to be one of these.. mostly just wondering what opinions are out there about these things... I've read that pauls of this model/year had a maple cap unlike the black beauty ..... i've also read that they (whether some or all) had maple necks... are those 2 fact or are they wrong?.. also how would a maple neck differ from a mahogany? thanks.

Customs i believe in the 70's thru the 80's all have Maple necks... i'm not sure about the current models.... My 76 LP Deluxe has a maple neck and as far as tone goes i like it... I find it feels stiffer then a Mahogany neck LP but i like the sound..

As far as an LP Custom from that period it is not bad at all!!! I'd buy one if i saw one at a good price...

All the Customs from the late 60's to now have a maple cap. The original 50's Customs, as well as the newer Custom Shop Reissue's ('54, '57, etc) Customs have all mahogany construction.

Maple necks showed up on Custom's around 1975, and continued til about the early 80's. They have a slightly different sound (more focused with maybe a little less warmth), and tend to be a little heavier in weight.

I've always liked the maple topped Customs (my favorite guitars are maple top Customs). The early 80's Customs are very good guitars. Much preferred over many other years. This sounds like a vey nice graduation present. Post some pics when you get a chance as we might be able to tell you more about the specific guitar. (These guitars are also going up in value. Seems like they jump in price every 6 months).

I also have a few slight suggestions on some changes that can be made to make these guitars even better.
