Information Overload - Recomendations Please!

I have serached the fourm for a few weeks now looking at threads with similar information requests. Needless to say there is a vast amount of information and opinion to digest so I thought I might add one more thread to the pile.

I am basically looking to remove the stock Gibson PAF '57 Classics out of a Les Paul Standard and replace them with a SD combination. I am most definitely interested in a non-covered 'zebra' model. The guitar is built to '59 Gibson (Historic/VOS) specs: Maple top and mahogany back, long tenon joint, rosewood board, no weight relief holes, etc.

I use one of two heads, either a JCM 800 or a Laney Pro Tube, through an old Marshall Lead slant cabinet with Weber 30 Watt Greenback clones.

The music I play is a dirty hard rock with a punk edge and some classic rock flavour to it; think The Hellacopters, Gluecifer, Supersuckers, etc. Those guitar tones are close to the one I have and dig.

Thanks for the advice. Cheers.

for classic to hard rock, people might recomend you the brobucker here (for the bridge). they say it's the ultimate hot-PAF.

i'm saving up money so sooner i could try that with my mahogany ibanez SA-320.

Re: Information Overload - Recomendations Please!

I've always loved my Les Paul with a Duncan Distortion in the bridge! I haven't found anything I couldn't do with it and a '59 in the neck.............

Welcome

59' in the neck fo sho!

Take your pick of a hot bridge bucker, but I would stay away from the custom custom.

A screamin demon will be silky smooth and hot, the ' 78 is the hoily grail. The JB will be trademark rock and roll, what do you want? Duncan Distortion works too^^

Personally I use amps and pedals for fuzz/OD so I prefer a clean bridge bucker like the Alnico II Pro, but that's me, you know.

Thanks for the replies.

Just for the record, I do not use any effects. The amps I have, in combination with the cab and speakers, sound great as is.

Re: Information Overload - Recomendations Please!

Anyone else with some much appreciated advice?

Re: Information Overload - Recomendations Please!

Yes. First tell us what the 57 Classics lack that you want. That would helps us zero in on it better.

Re: Information Overload - Recomendations Please!

The 57s sound decent in the standard but I already have another Les Paul with a pair of them. I am basically looking to experiment with new pickups.

Since my knowledge of pickups and my experience thus far is limited to using stock Gibson pickups, I am somewhat at a loss as to describe what I like and dislike about them as I really have nothing to compare them to with any great certainty.

I have used predominantly the 57s and "The Original" Gibson HB-R and HB-L type designed by Bill Lawrence. The 57s are a bit smoother and less brittle in the high end than the HBs. I like smooth, creamy but aggressive distortion tones. Think heavy without any harsness; a little more gain/distortion than that of an 800 with the preamp maxed out.

I guess I am just looking for a new flavour that will match up to my guitar, amps, cabinets and style.

Given your interest in music the best set for your Les Paul Standard would be a Duncan Custom for the bridge and a 59 for the neck..
