Initial Review of the Bare Knuckle Juggernaut Set!

Ibanez RGT42FXQM Juggernauts.jpg

So...I originally bought a DiMarzio Titan bridge for my Ibanez RGT42FXQM [catchy name]. I soon found that the low end was very restrained and didn't "breathe" and that the midrange was very spikey. I tried to get used to it but it continued to bother me. So, I went on Reverb and bought a set that some guy pulled out of his Aristides [and replaced them with Fishmans :/ ] for $270. Always. Look. For. Used. Pickups. I wasn't really digging the 59b in the neck so this worked out pretty well. Now for the tone...

These are the best pickups I've ever played in my life. The first time I tried these I wasn't expecting to like them [based on demos]. Totally. Wrong. The bridge is very balanced EQ-wise, with a large but controlled low end, pleasant midrange grind and an open high end that never gets harsh. The midrange have an interesting vocal, cocked wah type sound going on that I love. The neck is smooth, tight, and sweet, but retains pick attack when you want it to. Oddly enough, it doesn't have that same vocal quality. They sound very stratty split, and the neck has an interesting sound when wired in parallel.

Contrary to popular belief, these are not djent pickups. They will do djent if you want, but this is one of the only sets that I can and will recommend for anyone playing any genre (except maybe brutal-slam-death-grind-core or some **** like that). They're a set of medium output AlNiCo 5 humbuckers that can do pretty much anything. If you've got the cash, get a set right now.

Shoutout to gregory (https://forum.seymourduncan.com/member.php?34473-gregory) for helping me with wiring issues!

My Sz320 is going to receive some warpigs, I’m thinking of putting the ragnaroks in the RG since it’s very bright sounding, I’m getting a baritone in May so may put some aftermaths in there since they were the precursor to the juggernauts

Id absolutely go Juggernauts over aftermaths. After talking to one of my friends about various pickups in the range and my experience with the titan. The titan was probably based on an aftermath cause thats what jake was using b4. Supposedly they rolled off some high end harshness. Anyway, i found that with the titan the midrange was annoying and that u basically have to constantly be tuned to drop **** you with moderately weak string tension for the bass to sound decent. I expect the aftermaths to be more cutting in the highs with a more smoothed out midrange (after a comment on my titan post i blame dimarzios virtual vintage tech...the illuminator had a weird midrange too). My friend also said that warpigs were really harsh as well, which shocked me. he also said that nailbombs were alright, but hes pretty partial to rags and juggs.

The baritone I’m getting is all mahogany so I need a bright pickup but yeah I may go for the nailbombs, I like a very cutting tone with an airtight low end, I use BareKnuckles custom wound pickups in my multiscale tuned to B/A
I’m going for an ormsby custom build with custom wound SD pickups and a daemoness build with juggernauts
I wouldn’t use that genre of BareKnuckles for anything over C tbh as they would be too harsh to my ears

Hmm i never found that duncans handled modern metal all that well; most if not all duncans lack clarity under high gain

There’s plenty of modern metal bands that utilise Duncan’s effectively, tesseract, gojira, slipknot, feared and periphery to name a few
There’s plenty of Duncan that people get to work well with high gain such as the custom 5, omega, nazgul, JB, sentient, black winters

Re: Initial Review of the Bare Knuckle Juggernaut Set!

Tesseract uses BKP aftermaths and Blackhawks I thought. I thought the nazgul and JB were super lacking in clarity. The Omega was totally devoid of mids and bass. I just feel like BKP does everything better. When I play my other job BKP guitars I feel like there's something missing

I’m pretty sure they used Pegasus and sentient set at one point

Re: Initial Review of the Bare Knuckle Juggernaut Set!

huh i cant seem to find anything on that. pegasus/sentient are a fairly new release so...idk
Tesseract fanboy here. I've never heard Duncans spoken of either. Aftermaths and Blackhawks (and one DiMarzio paf neck). Their rhythm sound on the last album was a coil tapped BKP Blackhawk neck.

coil tapped neck?!

Re: Initial Review of the Bare Knuckle Juggernaut Set!

Or is it coil split? I always mix the two up. Anyway yeah, it makes for some unique sounds.

Weird, never knew that. FFR coil tapping is basically reducing power of the pickup, coil splitting literally only uses one coil
