So I really can't decide on what pickup for the bridge. I am keeping a 59n with A5 in the neck. I play through a Blackstar ID 60. I like some twang and gain. I like a solid thunky palm mute when playing chords in medium to high gain, but I also like a fluid single note tone to encourage me to use melodic fills and attempt light shredding. I like some twang especially when split to the two inner coils of the humbuckers, even better if both humbuckers together have a little honk to them. Some bite is nice for some dirty blues as well. I'm not much of a pedals guy, at most a Tubescreamer, Boss DS-1, or DOD Gunslinger. But usually just straight to the amp with a little reverb, and amp provided gain structure.

I voted for a stock JB, as I have the Trembucker version in my Strats bridge position and love it! No idea how it would sound in a PRS though.

A '59/Custom Hybrid sounds marvelous in that guitar and other similar PRS SEs, and it'll go perfectly with the '59n you already have.

What about a Pearly Gates bridge/Custom combo? I don't have a 59 bridge sitting around to make a hybrid. The main reason I listed those is because I have them in zebra, and funds are kind of short lately. Finding zebra used is less common as well. I'm not usually fond of how covers push the slug coil farther away from the strings and would also have to cover the PG/Custom Hybrid since my PG is white. I did try a Custom 5 with a rough A5 and it was alright, it just lost some power being covered and all, plus the tone on the slug was not as honky as the JB's slug coil. So the Custom 5 was kind of out my selective list.

Holy unwound coil mess! I would think that with all the opinions I see here on a bazillion subjects, that there would at least be more votes. You should vote, else yee be cursed with 10 humbuckers and only one magnet!

Re: Insane With Indecision (PRS SE Bernie Marsden pickup poll)

I voted so as not to be cursed, but I don't play your style of music so your very specific questions are out of my knowledge range, unless I guess..... which I did in the poll.

Re: Insane With Indecision (PRS SE Bernie Marsden pickup poll)

Perhaps the choices were too limited. FWIW, I voted the Demon with the A8. For fear of a curse, and because I love the a8 mag

Another vote for the 59/Custom Hybrid. Stock, it sounds like exactly what you want, and matches well with a 59n.

Ok, once again I will have to ask if a Pearly Gates/Custom Hybrid would be similar enough or better (in this application) then the 59/Custom one? Because I can get my soldering iron out and make the Pearly Gates/Custom Hybrid anytime.

Re: Insane With Indecision (PRS SE Bernie Marsden pickup poll)

Well, if you can make one...sure, try it. It will probably have more high end than a 59/Custom Hybrid, but that might be ok. I always say at least try what you have, first.

Re: Insane With Indecision (PRS SE Bernie Marsden pickup poll)

Gotcha, I would just hate to molest this Pearly Gates and take the time if it ended up way off. I was debating selling the Pearly Gates and it would probably sell for more, if messed with less. I do like the 59/Custom idea, I made one once but I used a 59 neck screw coil instead of the bridge one. I just wish that with an A5 the Custom slug coil had a little more twang when singled out (split to). Right now I am messing with using the Pearly Gates Covered with an UOA5 and it's not too bright that way. In a strat, uncovered, with the UOA5 it was pretty bright however, and thinner sounding then with the alnico 2. Covered with the UOA5 the Pearly Gates is sounding very AC//DC'esque and not too thin or trebly at all in this guitar. Not much in the twang department though, and not a whole lot of chunk, but a little delay adds some meat to it.

Re: Insane With Indecision (PRS SE Bernie Marsden pickup poll)

The Demon 8 works great, it reminds me of a tighter JB that cleans up better (in series mode), and is a slight bit fatter sounding. Not much twang, but there is some. I don't have enough for the write in vote right now, but I definitely respect the suggestion. A big thank you to those that chimed in.

I guess those not listed you already have? The usual suspects?

Nah, I just have a visual motif going on in that guitar, and the only zebra bridge pickups I have are the JB and Demon. So those two, stock or modified, are my only choices until a couple of my pickups sell on Reverb, then I can get whatever I want. Which looks like it will be a 59/Custom. However, I really should have put an "other" in the list and encouraged suggestions. Oh well, lesson learned.
