Installed SD Full Shred....

into the bridge of my Fender Jaguar, and the clean tone has some distortion on it now. I'm still picking my way through all of this, but the next step would be to install a new volume pot with a higher resistance, right? How do I determine wich one I need? Or can I just wire in a resistor in series to the current one?

Also, I'm looking for links to any sites that goes through pickup set up. If anyone has a link or 2 kicking around, it would be much appreciated.

I really wouldn't think a full shred would distort a clean channel as its only a medium output bucker. Are you sure you don't have you gain up on your amp or something?

i use a full shred and i get cleans fine, no distortion, ofcourse if the gain is up a little high on the clean channel then it will start to overdrive, but it is only medium output.

Thats what I thought at first, but I turned everything down on the amp, and she was still doing it. If I turn the volume down a bit... like down to 8, it sounds clear as a bell. I went from a single coil to a full shred, was kinda thinking there might be a little extra output from the FS compaired to the single coil.... But I could be totally way off. Would string hight be a big factor? what would be a good ballpark hight to start off at?

lower the pickup in the scratchplate until you're happy with the tone man - i just did this to all my guitars, they used to be too high..

I've found that the Full Shred is really sensitive to how close it is to the strings. Plus the Full Shred will have a higher output than the Jaguar single coils

First try lowering the pickup, when the Full Shred is intalled too close to the strings it will produce a distorted sound no matter how clean the amp is. Second check the volume pot to see if it is a 500k or 250k value. Personally I've found that the 500 is best ... but changing pot values shouldn't have a big effect on how clean the pickup is.

Thank you for all the help guys!! I went back and lowered the pickup till the overdrive was gone from the clean tone. But now the pickup seems really low compaired to the stock bridge pickup, and it's quieter...

The full Shred is aprox 0.25" away from the strings... is that too much? I checked the volume and tone pot values and they are both 1M ohm.

What am I doing wrong here?

1 meg pots are probably making the FS pretty bright which can contribute to a bit of dirt in the tone. As for pickup height, 1/4" is hardly extreme. I don't see anything wrong with it.

The height issue sounds normal to me ... from what I understand Jaguar Pickups are low output even by singlecoil standards and either way they (I suspect) generate less string pull than a humbucker. So it stands to reason that it would be lower than the stock bridge singlecoil. The drop in volume will probably occur with lowering the height of the pickup.

I think using the 1M pots are a bad idea. TheArchitect is right on that point. With the 1M pot there it's not suprising to me that you were getting a fair amount of dirt in the signal. It's usually recommended that Humbuckers are run through 500k volume pots. IMHO that will tame the pickup down and you could possibly raise the height a little as well.

As far as tone pots are concerned I run humbuckers with a 250k Tone pot with a .022 mfd cap ... but that's all subjective (case in point I use Green poly film caps instead of more popular Orange Drops or Hovland's).

Some stuff to think about but I would seriously consider switching to a 500k Volume pot, and a tone pot somewhere in the 250k-500k area
