Installing larger (taller) magnet?

I have an old SD Parallel Axis with it's Alnico 5 that I'd like to try a ceramic in that I have laying around. The ceramic is taller, so do I need to have a taller spacer to make everything fit back together properly?

I put it all together with the bobbins sitting all wonky like for the time being....and my god....it's a monster :bigeyes2:

Edit : Maybe it's similar now to the Parallel Axis Distortion?

On some pickups you can just turn the plastic spacers sideways to get the height you need, or you can cut some wood down to size real quick.

The PA1 is closer to a custom 5 than a distortion, so you just made it a custom+. As someone who uses the PA2 distortion I’ve wondered how this would sound. Seems like it would be much clearer and more articulate than a sh5 custom, while being a louder and more mid focused than a pa1.

Cool, I'll get to modifying properly. I haven't tried the Custom yet (but have recently been considering it), but this pickup is certainly hotter and louder than the standard PA1. It reminds me of EMG 81 type of heat, very hot. The mids are more pronounced, which I think partially makes it seem louder.

I like it, but maybe the Custom is better for me. I'm interested in a SD that has the typical ceramic feel/tone, but isn't super compressed.

You might try a regular size ceramic in there. The PATB-2b Distortion is wound hotter than yours - a ceramic in your PATB-1b is bound to be less compressed than that and probably would have a little less midrange than it does with the double thick mag..

Yeah that sounds like the best step next. I'll look around for the same sized magnet and maybe find what I'm looking for...until I get the pup fever again : popworm:
