Installing PU covers?

I heard from several people that they got annoying feedback after installing covers on their pick ups themselves. Anybody wants to share some advise?I am thinking of placing nickel covers on my Duncan Distortions (in a Les Paul). It may sound a little less good, but it looks soooo much cooler (especially sinds black pick ups in a wine red guitar look kind of ugly in my opinion...).

i think mainly...what the covers do is lower the magnetic power. Some people say its like covering up a mic, but i don't think it is that big of a drastic change. It does lower it a little, but nothing real noticable. I don't know to much about it...just from what i have experienced. Just make sure if you get covers...you get the correct dimensions.

The cover will muffle the tone a little...but not much. It's an audable diff tho. Puth a piece of 1/2" masking tape inside the cover where the nonadjustable polepieces will be.

Then clamp the cover on tightly with a padded C clamp before soldering.

That should do the trick.

It's always a good idea to repot the pickup once it's been covered. That should solve the feedback problem.

PM Gearjoneser. He has the best method for covering and wax potting a pickup that I've found.

I see what you mean. Nothing looks cooler than a red LP with black pick ups (except for James' of course > see avatar), BUT...

This LP I am talkin about would look ugly with black PU's because the plastic that's holding the PU's (dont know what it's called in English) is black:

Just for the record, that method I described is the way Tom Holmes installs his covers...his pickups sell for $500 per pair. Think that method works? It does.

Re: Installing PU covers?

I had an extra antiquity pickup cover that I stuck on a JB in a Les Paul and I have no feedback problems at all. I literally just pressed it on the pickup with my fingers and used a wrench to cinch the bottom a little (didn't even think of soldering, but this PU ain't goin' nowhere!)

Fit great, sounds great and to be honest, I didn't hear a difference in the sound. Maybe because the JB has such a high output? Anyway, no feedback.
