Installing Two Seymour Duncan Humbuckers in a 2012 PRS Custom 24 with 5 Way Blade

Hi everyone,

I recently purchased two SD humbuckers for my 2012 PRS Custom 24. It has the 5 way blade switch. I have done many searches and have found a lot of conflicting information on-line and in some cases, even here, with some older threads.

Some say to install one pickup backwards, others say to reverse one of the magnets within the pickup. There are even a few where people have tried everything to get the wiring correct and they still have phase issues.

Since there aren't a lot of new threads out there on this topic, I was wondering if anyone has information on how to successfully install two SD humbuckers in the Custom 24 with a 5 way blade. I am looking to install a Custom-Custom (TB-11) in the bridge and '59n in the neck.

Just wire them in normally. Phase only becomes an issue if you're combining different brands, for instance installing a Duncan in the bridge while keeping the stock neck pickup. With two Duncans there shouldn't be any problem.

On any PRS five-way selector switch, in order to preserve hum-cancellation in the split coil modes, it is conventional to invert the bar magnet in one of the pickups.

Connect the conductor wires in the normal sequence. Mount the pickups in the normal orientation - screw coils outwards.

From what I know, the PRS 5 way switching scheme uses a flipped magnet, like Funkfingers said. To duplicate it, I had to flip the magnet of the bridge pickup (from what I remember). Otherwise the phase problems will drive you crazy. When it is right, it is a really cool combo.

Does that mean stock PRS humbuckers have one mag reversed? Didn't know that, but for hum cancellation I guess it makes sense.

Would it work if you reversed the four conductor wiring?

From what I remember, PRS *does* used a reversed magnet to get all positions on the switch hum cancelling and in phase. I don't know which one is reversed though.

Thanks for responding. It's with my tech now. He flipped the magnet and will be wiring it up. I will let everyone know if we get this right and how it was done.
