cool vid, what is the difference between a maple spacer and a plastic one?
and he did that flip sloppy, i would have not been moving the coils around like that on a old PAF, i would loosen the coils then SLIDE the mag out of the side using a toothpick. moving the coils around like that is not a good idea, the wire is very delicate going to the coil

Yeah... I thought he was a little rough with it myself. I dunno if there's a significant tonal different with a maple spacer. I suppose it's one of those "sum of its parts" alchemy kind of thing, I dunno. A lot of the construction elements of pickups are what assists the "good microphonics" to enter the coils, such as the body vibrations. I suppose wood transfers/mutes vibrations differently than plastic.

yeah thats kind of what i thought as well since it is specifically maple used and not any wood.
it is amazing how many things affect the tone of a pu. like brass vs nickle for a baseplate, pole piece size and style, etc. i am just glad mr duncan got it right many years ago with his JB model. that pup makes my life a lot easier!:lmao:

Re: Interesting Gibson "Pat. No" 'bucker magnet flip repair.

I've seen a few real PAF-era 'buckers that were "non-functional" or had a dead coil that sold pretty cheap. Imagine making a JBJ/real PAF hybrid. ;)

I've done the maple v. plastic test, no difference I can hear. His yanking around wasn't that scary, I'd have been more careful, but the lead wires are taped in pretty well. When you need to be real careful is when you're desoldering the lead wires while you're pulling on them, but opening the pickup all the way isn't that crazy.

The thing he does that is crazy is using a soldering gun, those will degauss magnets!

really? i never knew that,is it the heat? can you degauss just a little without ruining the mag?

You cant ruin an alnico. You can break a ceramic.
An Alnico could be degaussed to the point that it need a recharge. But that not a big thing.
