Interesting interview with Ted McCarty

I can't help but think that Reverb was commenting slyly on current times with the title, "Former Gibson Chief Ted McCarty on Tonewoods and the Problems of 'Top-Heavy' Management."

My main takeaways were that Les Paul had almost nothing to do with the design of his eponymous guitar, Mary Ford was hot, and that Les Paul's royalty per guitar sold was $1, which translates from 1952 to $9.40 in today's dollars.

I would have loved to have learned more about McCarty's interactions with Paul Reed Smith, but I realize that this interview was conducted for a book on Gibson.

I read that the other day, very interesting. I would like to hear more about how the PRS McCarty came about.

My takeaway from the article was different. Mary Ford wasn’t “hot”, she was “pulchritudinous”!

The other thing of note to me was that the double cut LP Junior was designed to facilitate thumb over playing on the higher frets - I (and I suspect many others) think of “upper-fret access” as being able to get your fingers further up the neck rather than your thumb.

Same. You occasionally hear things like "the PRS McCarty is what he wishes the LP was in hindsight", which is odd considering he says in that interview that he never played guitar.
