Interesting phenomenon...

I restrung my MIA Strat last night with .010's and tuned it down 1/2 step from standard. I also took the opportunity to reflow any cold solder joints (see my "aw hell" thread) and something interesting happened... the guitar LOST bass and got twangier! What gives?

It did this just a little bit when I tuned down 1/2 step with .009's but I assumed it wouldn't do that with .010's. Anyone got a theory or explanation?

Did you perhaps cross a couple wires when checking the joints?

Nope... I made SURE of that. Like i said this happened a LITTLE bit with tuning 9's down but the effect is really pronounced with 10's.

Could it be that this is just the way poplar reacts to lower tunings or do you think this is a resonance phenomenon with this guitar?

I just discovered that the strings I used were Nickelplated steel and not pure nickel like I'm used to! That could account for everything right there. :laugh2:

could just be the size, more metal mean the pickups recieves more sound so your phenomenon is being herd more.

I just discovered that the strings I used were Nickelplated steel and not pure nickel like I'm used to! That could account for everything right there. :laugh2:

YES, it definitely could. Nickel is much fuller and warmer than steel, and the plating doesn´t make that much difference IMO.

And so far, it´s the only real thing I can think of to explain that, that´s why I hadn´t posted anything

If you're looking for pure nickel straings, I can wholeheartedly recommend DR Pure Blues ... the only string I use!!

The Tite Fits are nickel/steel.

hmm, tite fits.

do all companies have the same composition plain string? i was checking out juststrings.com and all the companies sell plain steel as their E, B, and G strings.

Just curious to know if i would hear a tone difference between the plain strings on my ernie ball set and the DR pure blues set; I know the windings on pure blues would give me the sweet nickel tone, but are the plains the same composition?

I didn't know that most companies use pure steel plain strings. Why is nickel warmer than steel?

i figure steel is a harder metal than nickel making it stiffer. This affects the vibration and causes you to get more output and overtones, but you sacrifice the warmth and softness in tone of nickel.

Steel IS refined Iron.

yeah but they advertise them like that, i dont know why. The strings are 52 percent nickel 48 percent iron or steel.

Does anybody know about whether or not a plain string is just a plain string and if they're all the same? Just curious. For example-does a DR pure nickel pure blues set have a different plain string composition than an ernie ball slinky set? I know the wound strings are different-the DR's are fully nickel wound, but do the DR's have more nickel in their plain strings as well?

Good question. I broke an 11 guage DR Pure Blues while stringing up my SG, and all I had laying around was an 11 guage Tite-fit. To me, they sounded identical. I wonder if it's just the wound strings that are different? Unfortunately, I had thrown away the Pure Blues package before I could compare model numbers on the string envelopes (if there were any).

yeah, im curious about this. If the strings are the same, ill just grab 12 packs off juststrings.com and ill buy EAD pure blues strings separately. I only break EBG strings so i dont need to worry about the durability of the wound strings as much, so the bulk purchase for the plain ones would save me lots of money.
