Interesting technique exercises

So, I've been thinking about ways to improve technique and speed, aside from bog-standard exercises with the metronome.

Here's a fun one - playing the Master of Puppets intro and signature riff... with all upstrokes :chairfall

Re: Interesting technique exercises

My upstrokes tend to be the most unnatural motion for me, and they always have. I do a lot of exercises using only upstrokes to keep them up to speed with my downstrokes. I think that you're on to something.

I first read this last night and thought 'I'm not bloody doing that'. But I was playing this morning, and I thought 'I'll give it a go'. Very hard...

Exactly. The idea came to be because I read about how Paul Gilbert had a stilted memory of guitar when he took it up again as a teenager, and played for 2 years (supposedly) with only upstrokes, trying to do metal galloping rhythms. Eventually a teacher put him right, but I figured that might be part of the equation.
