Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Hi there,

My name is Remy, also known as KramerAmsterdam to maybe a few of you if any frequent the Kramer Forum. This is my first post here so I thought to introduce myself.
I am from the Netherlands and have a bunch of Kramer guitars..all but 1 of them have Duncans in there, my favorite choice of pickups. I love'em. Custom, Parallel Axis and JB's being favorite's.

I do have some things to ask though-I recently acquired custom made EVH's pickups through 2 different deals and though they sound good, the looks won't tell me they are EVH's? I have 3 in total: 1 says bridge (regular-black) DC 8,5 , 1 neck (regular black) DC 7+, 1 no marking -F spaced, zebra-DC 8.7. 1st 2 having 4 conductor wire and the F-spaced braided 1 wire.

The DC seems kinda low, but my meter is not a pro one, usually with most pickups it's different than SD have listed on their site, might be the reason.

I did get a mail returned from Seymour's Custom shop-and I bet they're busy there so I do not want to bother again but if I understand well the backplate should be a plain Jane, no Seymour Duncan made in USA script unless it is short legged or F-spaced? Well all of these have scripts AND 2 have stickers..

so my question, finally, is this-is there any pictures or ways of telling these are the real deal? They sound good/great (low output-have to rework settings more) but I do like to know if these are the real ones, and also for future references if I bump into one-how to recognize one?

Thanks for your attention and also thanks for having this great Forum up. Very helpfull and usefull.

Regards,
Remy

Hey Remy. Welcome to the forum. I used to post at the old Kramer forum. Just never got around to re-register at the new one.

Can you snap some pics of them? The DC reading looks about right on a couple of them. The one around 7k I'm concerned about. That's nowhere near the '78 Model resistance (EVH model is now the '78 Model).

MJ in the Custom Shop would be able to help as well but have some pics ready. They speak a thousand words.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

My 78 (what you call an EVH) measures in at 9.1 but given the +/- margin of approximately 5% the 8.7 and 8.5 could very well be 78's.

I think the officical specs have them at 9K.

Have you tried any of them?

Luke

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Hi Erik, Luke,

Thanks for replying, I appreciate it. Great forum-I did lurk here before ofcourse-time to register.

I can make pics of the backs-though they are in a guitar now. You think if I send those to the Custom shop they will look at them and reply? No firewall tha twill delete that email of mine? The words they wrote were cryptical(sp) haha.

The lower resistance at 7+ has only a 'neck' sticker on it's back (and regular 'SD made in usa' script), the other one at 8,5 has a bridge sticker and that same script.

The F-spaced zebra model has no sticker at all, same script and measures a tad hotter, 8,7 iirc..since it's F-spaced and has braided wire-I do feel it's customshop made.

So its good both bridge pu's have lower DC-rating, so that might just be my pos ohmmeter?

I tried all 3 of them. The 2 'bridge' versions so sound very much the same actually, and the neck sounds great as well..as a thinner, rockier version of a Jazz neck?

I think what worries me most is the fact they have no type markings. They usually are immaculate at SD to do so over the years. Also I saw a ebay auction recently (hence my initial request for pics of the back of '78's) where there was an autographed sticker?

When I made the pics I'll post the here, first, ok?

And yes, the old forum-new forum is still ok, but too big sometimes, miss many treads-but it is still fun-we just had the Kramer Expo meeting in Newcastle England-many Duncans too!

Thanks and rock on

Remy

Remy,

I would shoot Evan a PM with IMG links, or start a thread and ask him who to send the email to.

The older 78s lowest resistance I ever heard of was 8.5K but the specs were for 8.75K-9K on the old CS page....I THINK. But you said they sound the same so it's the same pup I'm pretty sure.

Hope that helps!

Evan being Evan Skopp. He'll hook you up with the address to send stuff to. I wouldn't mind seeing pics either.

I'd like to go to one of the Kramer Expo's sometime. I'd have to bring along my NYC Baretta to show off.

At Arkansas Hospice we have water fountains only, besides it would take 3 bucks to make a pot if I went across the street and bought bottled water from Walgreens and I probably wouldn't get a DROP.

That stinks.

Remy is gonna love this thread. Pickups and coffee. :laugh2:

How are you liking your '78?

Remy wants coffee, we all want coffee

You need one.

Straight up you do.

He was still using it on Balance. It get SCARY close with the PRS and my Marshall. That was with D!ck playing though it. I haven't really done much VH stuff...I can get pretty close to Little Dreamer too.

It freaks me out.

From my understanding, he never used the '78 at all. It was either the CC on some stuff, the old rewound PAF, the DiMarzios in the EBMM (which he used on Balance) or the Peavey's in the Wolfgang (protoypes used on Balance).

I know I need one. I played one of Lew's Squier Strats with one in it. It was incredible how good it sounded.

I've got my coffee. :)

Surely you don't believe what you read.....:laugh2:
I don't claim to be the fan you or D!ck are, but I can tell you there's something there.

I forgot you played Lew's strat. Why haven't you got a 78 yet? Maybe you should threaten your wife, tell her if she doesn't get you one you'll start smoking again? :6:

Fine FINE just BRAG ABOUT IT!! Hey hey LOOK AT ME, I HAVE COFFEE......oh yeah, and it doesn't taste like DUNG!

Not everything, no, but that's one story I've heard over and over again consistantly through the years.

Why haven't I gotten on yet? One word.....Tele. :) I'm on a spending freeze for at least another 5 months. The agreement with the Mrs. was get the Tele, and no other purchases other than maintenance stuff for 6 months. Thing is, I don't know what I'd put the '78 in. It wouldn't go in my Frankenstrat, the CC is stayin' there. I don't play the Kramer much anymore and it's got a CC in it. The Tele is staying stock. The Fender Strat has the DiMarzios and is perfect the way it is for what I want out of it. And the LP, well, it's got the Brobucker the Mrs. got me and that is staying put. I love that pickup.

The threat wouldn't work anyway with her. She'd say, "whatever you want to do but you can't get the pickup." ...LOL. I'm king of my castle and she give me permission to say so. :D :laugh2:

No dung coffee is good....LOL.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

Yeah, after I bought the R8 I'm on 6 month freeze as well. Thank goodness my B-day is next month so I can get some pups. But I've also got to get a new masonic ring for our lodge's 150th anniversary too.

I think I'm going to go with either a set of PGs, or a PG/78 combo.

I've gotta get to a Starbucks.

Re: Intro-EVH/'78 back markings/DC?

It's nice to know I'm not the only one on a freeze...LOL. How our wives put up with us I don't know. Gotta love 'em for that. The next purchase after the freeze is a white pearl pickguard for the Tele and then a Mission Aurora.

Starbucks? So you're gonna go from free dung to $4.00 dung? LMAO!!!! I'm not a Starbucks fan. I'll go 7-11 first.

Last April I got the PRS, July I bought a CS pup from Christian, August I revamped the tele, October I got the Marshall. Then this month I got the R8.

You really like the Aurora didn't you?

There's not a 7-11 within probably 300 miles. Last time I got coffee from a convience store I got BURNED coffee. Do you know how hard it is to burn coffee?: eek13:

Starbucks is a long way from here, but I've been wanting some for about 48 hours.

Very much so. I really impressed me a lot. The tone is incredible.

Burned? Sheesh...yeah, I'd go somewhere else....LOL

EDIT: Thread massively hijacked but that '78 sure is a great pickup...LOL.
