True. It's very hard to get a good "feel" for a custom shop pickup when it's from the Seymour Duncan channel or other big channels rely heavily on their post-mastering skills of their ads/reviews. There are always a group of people who swear everything they buy doesn't sound anything like how the product was marketed, after all.
Everyone's amps and other gear also makes everything sound different. Those types of small variations that make things have vastly different outcomes.
I do all my stuff with clean, dirty and with wet effects, and make sure EQ is pretty much flat EQ like you're plugging into an interface without any hindrances.
