Pickup Booster Mini

Meet the Pickup Booster Mini, our classic Pickup Booster in a pedalboard space-saving size. It delivers that extra push when you need it, along with our unique resonance switch that adds extra versatility! Think of it as your tone's best friend, now in a compact package that won't hog precious board space. Inside this mini powerhouse, you'll find our studio-grade class A circuit and true-bypass switching, ready to boost your signal while keeping your guitar's personality intact. Whether you're after a subtle boost or need to really push your amp, the discrete push-pull design has you covered. And here's a bonus: even at zero gain, it'll clean up your signal chain and make those tone-degrading long cable runs behave.

Need to pull a humbucker sound from your Strat®? The resonance switch makes the pedal interact directly with your pickups, letting your single coils emulate either a chunky humbucker sound perfect for classic rock and blues, or a high-output tone for soaring leads. Running humbuckers? Position 1 adds some teeth to your sound, while Position 2 can give you a hint of that 'cocked-wah' filter sound that'll make your solos cut. Bring one guitar to the gig and cover all that tonal territory with one simple switch!

This mini pedal delivers the exact same boosting and tone-shaping power of the iconic Pickup Booster that players have sworn by for two decades – we just made it easier to find room for it on your board.

Looking at the schematics it's actually kinda neat how the "resonance switch" is actually just a first order treble filter that uses values that only work with an unbuffered signal. I wonder why that is.

I like it. Especially the paint job. But I still question the input Z. I don't understand why they don't make it mimic an amp input at 1 meg, rather than this one at 250k. Even the old SFX-01 was 470k.

I'm sure it works and sounds good, and I'm sure I'm going to get one. But the choice of input Z confuses me. Love that it's class A.

I also like that they made the bottom gain setting zero, for true buffer action.

Yeah, I am not sure why they did that. Or why the different versions of the pedal are...different. I guess refining the design as they go along?

I was just about to pull the trigger on this, when I noticed that Sweetwater had the "other" version, in the Limited Edition Black, for just $5 more. So I snagged it instead. I went back to look at the pic, and it's gone. I must've snagged the last one. Even Duncan doesn't list it anymore.

Hopefully they fixed the error where one of the power filtering caps isn't actually connected to anything.

From Gottfried Divos of Tracing Journal:

One other thing to note is the lack of power filtering. There’s a single 220nF capacitor on the +V supply, and then Vref has a 4.7uF filter capacitor. Interestingly, though, there was a mistake in the PCB layout and the 4.7uF capacitor isn’t actually connected to the ground plane like it should be. It’s just a dead-end. The unit we traced was manufactured in 2018, so it’s likely an issue with all versions going back to 2015. It was easy to tell what they meant to do, so for the schematic I went ahead and corrected this mistake.

I assume that means the brown ones. Don't try to use them with noisy power. You can DIY fix it yourself with a single wire

Oh cool, I will try to look up that fix. Although I never had a noise issue with mine.

hmm... i have a 1st gen model, wonder if it has this same issue.

That actually looks nicer than the "Limited Edition" black. At least in pics. We'll see when it gets here. It's been shipped.

I wonder why Duncan makes these, and then quits. The original SFX-01 is sweet.

I am not sure. My guess is that the pedals are all limited runs, even if they aren't advertised as so. If they are selling well, they order the next batch in a different color, or even a re-design (just guessing here).
