Invader in my ESP Viper?

So I'm a big Down and COC fan. I noticed both Pepper and Woody use Invaders in their ESP SG style guitars. Pepper also uses them in Down. I love their tone...but I've heard so many bad things about the Invader like do not put them in mahagony guitars, and do not down tune with them...yet both Pepper and Woody down tune and use them in Mahagony guitars. What's your opinion? Should I give it a shot or stay away from the Invader? I also have an H3 I could use instead, because I've heard Pepper used that before the Invader.

I can't comment on the types of music you mention re the Invader, but check out another Invader thread in progress which may be touching on your concerns.

Re: Invader in my ESP Viper?

I just bought an Invader and P-rail to put into a '77 Dean ML... I'm installing them today or tomorrow and will let you know how close I get to the Pepper's tone...

Re: Invader in my ESP Viper?

Alot of ppl read the duncan tone chart and see that the invader is a very low end pickup and lacks highs and they figure that it can't go in a mahogany guitar because mahogany is a darker tone wood, even though 9 out of 10 haven't even tried it. If you dig his tone then try it for yourself and you be the judge:friday:

To my ears, the Invader is not a dark pickup at all. It provides a lot of high-end information and I could see it working very well in Mahogany, which is not, to my ears, that dark of a wood.

Re: Invader in my ESP Viper?

Man this pickup is hot! Not muddy at all and I'm tuning down to C# and then did drop tuning from there... The highs are fine... I basically copied Peps rig with the exception of the JCM 800 2203x (I'm using a Mesa Trip Rec) and I'm getting the tone that you hear on "In the Arms of God" and "On March the Saints"... Gain on about six....
I'm not getting the "woody" feel that I am used to (I like my tone like "The Sword") but sounding like Pepper is never a bad thing... But keep in mind that the H3 is probably the sound from "Deliverance" which is cool too...
The P-rail that I installed in the neck is a little tricky though... I'm using push/pull pots and will probably rewire to a mini-toggle to make my switching easier... It's nice to be able to have that P90 sound for "Stone the Crow" and then switch to full on dirty Down sounds...
I hope this helped...

Very cool...thanks for the reply!

Re: Invader in my ESP Viper?

I've tried the Invader and do not care for it. If you're putting in a Viper, I would suggest using a 1 Meg volume pot and no tone.
