Invader - Possible magnet flip? Diagnosis.

I bought a used Invader online a while ago haven't gotten around to using it. I don't think I will at this point so I'm about to throw it back online. Here's the deal though... When I got it I wasn't as knowledgeable as I am know... still a long way to go but... the Green and Black wires are soldered together with the and the White is grounded with the Bare. Red is hot. The logo side which would normally be the screw side is "North" and the non-logo side which is usually the stud side is "South"

I'm thinking that the magnet has been flipped to work with another brand's single coils maybe? Anybody know if this is a common mod to make it compatible with another brand? If so what brand? I just want to make sure it's right before I sell it or what to disclose if I don't change it back.

Welcome to the forum. The wires being used is nothing permanent. So I would just confirm, with a magnet that you know the orientation, what way the invader magnet is facing. And if it's not north up and south to the logo side then change it back. That way you don't have to say it's been fiddled with.

Thanks! Yeah I know the wires aren't set it stone. I was just saying that that was the clue to me that something was up. So to flip the magnet just loosen the screws and slide it out, flip her around and button it up? Is it really that easy?

Re: Invader - Possible magnet flip? Diagnosis.

Sorry, I forgot the invader has 3 magnets. So yes do that to all 3.

The wiring is a little wacky when paired with a magnet flip. It will still be out of phase with an unmolested Duncan.

It's kinda funny to read about this just after recommending the same wiring in another discussion.

Just to confirm - If I flip the magnet(s) around and figure normal wiring as black-hot white/red-series link, and green is ground - then it should be back in phase with other SD pickups. BTW I think I read that other discussion you mentioned when trying to figure this out before posting.

Yap. Should go from top to bottom: south, north, north, south, south, north.

If you flip the magnet then you also need to reverse the wiring:

Red <-> Green
Black <-> White

If you wish to keep the red-white series link then green would need to go to hot and black to ground. If the wiring works better for the black and green to be the series link then the hot would need to be white and the ground would need to be red. Again, either of these would need to accommodate a magnet flip in order to remain in phase with standard Duncan convention.

Just to clarify I want to flip the magnets back to stock.

Re: Invader - Possible magnet flip? Diagnosis.

Stock polarity: Screw coil/coil labeled with Seymour Duncan for bridge pup/unlabeled coil for neck pup becomes South.

Stock wiring:
Black goes to hot
Red-white connected and isolated
Green and bare connected and go to ground

For Black-Green as the series link with stock polarity then red goes to hot; white and bare go to ground.

From what the original wiring description is, it sounds like the wiring was reversed. Maybe not the magnet at all?

The wiring wasn't reversed, just the order of the coils was swapped.
