Invader vs. Custom in a mohaganny V

Hi guys, new to the site. I play fuzz rock/stoned rock through a Marshall JCM 900 w/a green big muff. I can’t seem to get the bass and sustain/ gain get from other guitars and happen to have an invader lying around. I know this guy gets dumped on sometimes, but does anyone know how well it works with fuzz pedals or in V’s. Thanks!

It should work for what you are looking for, the Invader is very bass heavy. The Custom is bright and some consider it harsh.

And if you have it just laying around, why not give it a try?

Well, the two are almost on opposite ends of the tonal spectrum. Like comparing a Yugo to a Corvette. The Invader is very bass and mid heavy with pretty high output. It should drive a fuzz into violin territory...lots of sustain. But tonally, I'm not sure that's what you want for the type of music you play.

And if you find that the Invader is a little "dark" sounding, not enough upper mid/high output, try a 1Mohm volume pot. I did that in one of my LP style axes and it really cuts through.

+1. At least one 1meg pot is a must for any pickup this hot, maybe even make both volume and tone 1meg if you wanna shift the eq curve even more towards the treble.

One of the nice things about an Invader is that it cleans up and gets almost PAF-ish when run in parallel. Definitely worth using a push-pull if you install one.

I agree that these are tonal opposites, but hey, you already have an Invader, so try it out and let us know how it sounds. If you still want to try the Custom, it is also a cool idea to order a few magnets with it like an Alnico II and Alnico V, as you may prefer it one way or the other. Also, it is fun to experiment.
