iRig/AmpliTube

I gave my son my Mooer GE200 when he moved out, and found myself needing a new headphone rig. Was gonna go for a Line 6 HX Stomp, then read about the Pod Go, then saw the small Headrush board, then thought about an older gen AXE-FX, and got caught in option paralysis.

Decided to pick up an iRig HD 2 to tide me over until I decided on the “real” device. Even on my iPhone, the interface is awesome and super intuitive, and AmpliTube has some killer free sounds. Gambled $29 on the Mesa bundle, and now I think I’m going for an iPad and a better set of headphones.

The Dual Recto model is awesome, but within two minutes of turning on the Mark IV, I had the best modeled tone I’ve ever had dialed in. I’ve never been able to dial in a great tone and just play as quickly as with this.

I use AmpliTube on my Mac Mini for practice. My guitar connects through a Focusrite Scarlett Solo. I used to use AmpliTube on an iPhone with an iRig, which I still have a couple of. Version 5 has gotten really good with the sounds. Being able to practice with headphones certainly pleases the rest of the family. At some point, now that I have a dedicated office / music room, I want to get a set of monitors for in here so I can practice without headphones of I want. Sure, I still have my amp but it's so much easier to mix the songs with my playing with my Mac Mini.

I have the Soldano SLO model and the Satch Overdrive which is really a Boss OD-1 model. The built-in AmpliTube Marshall models have gotten so much better since I started using it. I've taking the Bri 8000 through a Vintage 4x12, cranked everything up and it has the sound.

Which other apps do you like? I’m already a little invested in AmpliTube, but love trying new stuff.

And seriously, if you guys are looking for chuggy, aggressive metal, that Mark IV with the first 4x12 and the boost pedal that comes with it is insane.

The three I demoed are Amplitube, Bias FX and THU. They all sounded great. I was about to jump into Bias FX, then the artist packs of Amplitube. Before I bought a ridiculous amount of plugins, I realized the main purpose for me was to practice. I bought a set of Waza Airs. So freeing to have no cables at all, easy Bluetooth for backing tracks and great tone as well. The reverb/space is done so well, it doesn’t grate on my ears like other headphone practice usually does. Once I get into recording I’ll probably explore the packs of both again.

I've used the iRig HD 2 and my iPad to record stuff in GarageBand, and was impressed with the results. I've even used the Brian May bundle on my iPad to record Queen-esque guitar tones into my Mac using Studio One. It just gives me more recording options and is very convenient.

I tried one of those but just couldn't get into it. Too many wires in too tight of a space or something, it just annoyed me constantly. Quality wasn't bad, just not comfortable for me at all.

I have the iRig 1 and AmpliTube on my iPhone. Works great. I use AmpliTube 5 on my iMac for practicing.

I have the older original iRig HD, and it still works great with amplitude and bias amp. I have the same Mesa bundle, and the MKIV is my go-to. Incredible authentic Mesa tone through my headphones.

Added the Engl Powerball, and wow… that thing with the Recto 4x12, 31 band EQ in front cutting like 80hz and below is demonic.

You cut 80hz and below? I usually boost 80 down to 60 and cut everything below 30.

That’s for my 8 string. It’s a .074 at 27.5” tuned to F# or E, and has a tendency to sound like a bass if I don’t cut that range.

If I’m playing clean, the EQ gets shut off.

Do you play with a bass player? That’s too much low end on a guitar. It sounds good if you’re playing by yourself, but in a band situation takes up too much space where the bass and drums live.

When I was playing bass in bands I often had to walk over to the guitar player’s amp and turn the bass knob down. Lol

I have the PC version of Amplitube, and picked up a bunch of the expansions when they were on offer, although I probably would have saved money just buying the complete bundle.

I like the improvements they make with each version, and although I still think that Two Notes and Bias probably have the advantage in certain specific areas, I think Amplitube has the broadest cover, and great licensed emulations.

40 and below isn't really audible. That should get cut on bass and kick drum as well.

Cut everything below 500 hz and experience the shiny guitar you hear on Top 40 pop songs.

I've been known to turn down the treble on the bass player's amp, lol. Everybody get in your range and stay there! :)
