I just got the early years DVD and let me tell you, it is awesome! I was especially diging the Show from 83 in Germany. They sound so great live. I wish I knew what and how they got their guitar sounds. they both have huge pedal boards and in The Trooper, you can hear Adrian switch something on for the solo that gives it a LOUD volume and gain boost. He turned it on a bit too early in the song though :)


I jsut got a bootleg of the Somehwere in Time tour from the Spectrum in Philly and I can't wait for it to get here. I was at that show, and it rocked although they didn't play half of my favorite songs.

Well since I was asking about their guitar sounds and wondering what they used, NO, I don't think this shouls be off topic!

I do beleive that guitar sounds and pedalsbords fall under the catagory of Guitar Room.

the boost he used on the PowerSlave tour was an MXR Micro Amp :newangel:

Well I dont really know a lot about their gear, but I love Iron Maiden so here you go, have a bump! =D

In the eighties I'm pretty sure the amps were Marshalls, Marshalls, Marshalls. The guitars always looked like some kind of modified strats. Those guys were GREAT and their sound was killer too. Get Killers if you don't have it. The singer is Paul D'Iano I think, but it's a kickin guitar album.

I don't know about 1983 but in 1984 they used the following gear:
Dave Murray: Various Strats, SGs, a Dean V and an Ibanez roadstar, as for amplification he used custom 50watts Marshalls. Effects:MXR distortions and phasers,ADT chorus.
Adrian Smith: Lado guitars?(what are they? Esps?) a Dean ML, a couple of Ibanez roadstars and a Hamer scarab. For amplification he used a custom rack of 4 Marshalls as Dave Murray. Effects: Lexicorn reverb, Furman parametric EQ, a Boss D-2-DDL

Lado guitars was a Toronto based guitar maker. He made cool stuff but always extremely extensive. Iron Maiden used his stuff for a few years.

I want to buy this Early Years dvd. I love the Live After Death cds. Funny part is i was teen back in the 80's and didn't like Iron Maiden but now i love them!! Strange! But anyways i believe that both guitarists in Iron Maiden used custom made pedal boards and their main distortion i believe was supplied via a MXR Distortion Plus. The pedal Board also had boost switches and Noise Filters built in by the guy who did their work. It was a real custom job. As for that big boost during 2 minutes to midnight i'm not 100% sure what they used. The MXR Micro Amp some said here i have never tried out so i have no idea what it does. If it is the Micro Amp thanks for the tip.

Today with a few pedals you can get the same set up using a Boss Line Selector pedal..... Thru a clean amp run the Line Selector with a good distortion pedal for Iron Maiden tones in one loop and another heavier and volume set louder distortion pedal in the other loop and you can switch to a screaming loud sound. This only works thru a clean amp. If you try the same set up thru a distorted channel it does not get louder, just more distorted. Makes me wonder if the guys in IM were useing their Marshalls clean and using their pedals for their dirt sounds all the time...... It would not surprise me as they sound like they are using pedals.

That DVD shows Dave Murray using a Destroyer along with Adrian as well. I knew Adrian played that red one but never saw Dave with one till now.

I can't really tell, but from the live Beast on the Road Tour and Teh Pice of Mind tour, the guitars sound a bit different,especially Adrian. I Can't tell if it is just the production on the Beast tour VS the Piece of mind concert.

IT looked like it was a LOT better, and that is probably becasue they shot it intending to release it, but never did.

The Piece of Mind is a lot Rawer I guess you could call it, you can here them switching stuff in and out and a few mess ups here and there.

I have a Micro amp and it doesn't give me that kind of a boost, it is just a volume ,not a gain type boost.

I know they used Marhsalls, but I have one now and it doesn't give me anywhere near as much gain as they were using.

They have so much gain on these live shows that thier tone would be useless for some stuff, like Van Halen etc.

Adrian used a TS-9 Tube Screamer and Dave used an MXR Distortion Plus to boost their Marshalls back then. They were also using custom made pedal boards by Pete Cornish. Both used STOCK early 70s NON-master volume Marshall 50 watt heads. Adrian primarily used an Ibanez Destoyer, his Les Paul Gold Top (which I have actually played and it is what EVERY Gibson should be, but isnt) and a Gibson SG. Dave's main guitar was his 1957 Fender Strat and both used DiMarzio Super Distortion PUs.

I worked on Bruce's "Accident of Birth" CD so I was able to hang with Bruce and Adrian, both of whom were extremely cool and down to earth. Since Adrian is my biggest influece it was a really amazing experience for me.

It's funny..when I was younger I used to think "oh, I need more gain..my 800 doesnt seem to have enough"...but they really did have a lot of gain, and with those SD's like Dave & Adrian used and a boost for solos, it's no prob to cop those sounds.

Recordings always sound like they have more gain than they actually do it seems. AC/DC is a prime example. You'd think Angus had a pile of gain going on there. But he didn't.

I can get a VERY convincing Live After Death Adrian tone with my new LP w/ BB Pro's (pretty hot pup) and the ValveTronix 800 series model. I don't even run the gain full up. Master dimed, Volume around 1-2 o'clock and Gain about 3 o'clock. Then use a boost for the leads. IMO, LAD is just the ultimate in Maiden Guitar sounds. Even the HammerSmith recordings..not as polished, but both sets are classic examples of how good the early to mid 70's Marshalls sound for Hard Rock/Metal. They are my fave Marshalls...they could purr or rip your face off. When they both roll off for the clean-ish parts and Adrian kicks in his Chorus and Dave his phaser in Revelations that is just about my all time favorite guitar sound from any artist.
