Is 50's wiring the same as Parallel wiring?

Re: Is 50's wiring the same as Parallel wiring?

Not as such. 50's wiring is the one where either volume turn the guitar off on 0, when both pickups are on, and also the placement of the tone capacitor is a little different, usually.

Re: Is 50's wiring the same as Parallel wiring?

The so-called Fifties wiring is one permutation of how the connections are made to the input and output terminals of the volume pots.

On the typical two pickup, one switch, four control pots Gibson electric guitar, the pickups are wired in parallel with respect to each other.

Re: Is 50's wiring the same as Parallel wiring?

Not even close. 50's wiring just alters what part of the volume control the tone circuit is attached to. It gives independent volume controls in the mid position plus a brighter tone at any point of volume.

I'm not sure what you mean by parallel wiring, but the mid position on a 3 way a the 2/4 posi's on a 5 way connect the pickups in parallel - thats why the quack happens.

Re: Is 50's wiring the same as Parallel wiring?

I thought modern Gibsons were wired in series.

It is the two coils within each humbucker that are connected in series. Thereafter, the pickups are combined in parallel.

Exceptions to this sweeping generalisation are the coils of the P100 (stacked coils, wired in parallel) and the pickup combinations offered on the rotary pickup selector switch of the L6. The S-1 probably also offered series coil combinations but, of course, its pickups were single coils rather than humbuckers.
