Is a 31 band EQ overkill for guitar?

Should I get a 31 band EQ or 15 band EQ for tone shaping purposes? I plan to place the EQ either before a sonic maximer or after. These 2 units are going to be the last units in the chain.

Thanks :)

yea, i think its just overkill....imo tho, im sure there are people that say it is good....(obviously, they made it afterall, lol)

31 bands is way overkill for guitar tone shaping. A 31-band EQ has a band every 1/3 octave, and its primary purpose is flattening a PA systems response to match a room.

Re: Is a 31 band EQ overkill for guitar?

I would say even 10-band can be overkill. But if you really want your 15-bands, I'm sure there are better options that Behringer.

I had a DOD 31 band in a guitar rack years ago, and it's good for tweaking every frequency perfectly. However, it seems like it's overkill to have it WITH a Sonic Maximizer. The more rack gear you have in the chain, the more it clutters the clarity. The less you have, the purer the signal. I'd say one or the other, but it's too much junk to have a maximizer and EQ. Just my 2 cents.

A+

I want a 500 band eq, all of which would be devoted to scooping out the midrange.

Re: Is a 31 band EQ overkill for guitar?

P.S. Dump the sonic Max- no need for it on guitar IMO, come to think of it no need for them at all, unless you have a REALLY REALLY crappy PA/amp - a good eq properly set will do the same thing w/o any noise, for alot less money.

Thanks for the replies, guys!

I guess, I'll skip buying the EQ. I am currently using a triaxis with a parametric EQ and a sonic maximizer. I just thought that adding a graphic EQ would give me more control over the overall sound.

WOW... I would imagine with a Triaxis, a Para EQ and and a Sonic Maximizer you would have all the control over your tone you would want. But that's just me. Probably a good idea for you to skip that EQ.

IMO a 31 band is not overkill unless used in such a fashion... regardless of what´s already in the rig....

Sorry bro, but I have to call BS here..... the entire working principle is different, and I definitely hear a different effect from a BBE than from an EQ...

BTW, MANY players swear by the combination of Peavey 5150 with a BBE 362 or 462 in the loop... I think the 5150 is far from a crappy amp (not my personal taste, but...) ;)

imho, a 31-band would be overkill in a guitar rig unless you have the ears for it. its mostly used to tune front of houses/studio monitors to compensate for the acoustic properties for a room/space.

As usual, I find myself agreeing with Herr Zerb.

You're way, way wrong, bro.

Mmmmmm............ mixed response here.

I'm quite an audiophile, but I think that I'll just wait until I get a power amp (VHT 2/50/2). From all the reviews I read about it, the presence, depth, and voicing options would seem to cover what I need.

Does anyone have the VHT?

Thanks!!

Yes, in my opinion, a 31 band EQ is overkill for a guitar. Either you have phenomenal hearing and are going to fine-tune every frequency like someone afflicted with obsessive+compulsive disorder, or you actually ARE afflicted with that disorder and just need help! :) Besides, I prefer the way the instrument actually SOUNDS. The more processing you run, the more processed your sound will be (i.e. less "organic" and more "synthesizer"). Maybe less time playing with 31 EQ bands and more time spent with friends/family/kids would be a good investment.

Re: Is a 31 band EQ overkill for guitar?

who wants to play with 31 frequencies? by the time you are done adjusting all of those there will be no time left to actually play.
