I just emailed him before this thread. (I HATE CRAIGSLIST ADS THAT DON'T HAVE A PHONE NUMBER!!!) Its my #1 pet peeve lately, cause it just prolongs the whole "do you have it, can I see it, oh? is it already gone?" process. Just leave a #
They've been going upwards of $500. Even if you have to have it rebuilt you will come out way ahead. I highly recommend replacing the stock speaker with a Kendrick speaker. It blows the Webbers out of the water. Plus you can keep the original speaker safe in a box and then you don't have to worry about blowing it out if you ever crank the amp.
even if it needs a little TLC, yeah I'd do it. The champ is one of the circuits that supposedly didn't change very much from 1964 until (I think) 1982. They have a great spanky clean sound but on 10 they break up pretty nicely. Reminds me of recordings I've heard of tweed champs but with less mids.
I've owned a dozen or more BF and SF Champs and Vibro Champs...back in the 90's before the big vintage bubble I was buyign champs for $50-75 and vibrochamps for $75-100.
I'd never gig them or anything (well, I have but thats another story!) but they are great for playing at home and they fun little toy amps but with todays market and current prices they are toy most folks won't mess with...
I'd NEVER pay $500 for a SF Champ unless it was NOS in the box.
As for CBS changes they left the champ alone as it was already a fairly cheep build...the lead dress did get sloppy in the 70's and caps changed from blue mallorys to the brown caps, the brass ground board went by by and the cab went down the drain like all 70's Fender amps but those things make little to no difference in a small amp like a Champ IMHO.
If you can get it, get it...pay the bucks for a cap job, stash the speaker and get a weber for it and you'll have a great little bedroom amp.
The design of the Champ was so simple that there was nothing in there for CBS to f*** up. Excellent recording amp. Adding a Boss PQ-4 Parametric EQ pedal or a Graphic EQ pedal to boost the midrange could make life interesting.
I tried. I've emailed and emailed again. Either the guy is out of town for the weekend, or he's doing the classic craigslist act of leaving the ad up and ignoring all inquiries after it sells. who knows.
