I must've missed something.. whats the CC/59 hybrid? :?:
It is a pickup fabricated using 1-59 BRIDGE coil and 1-DUNCAN CUSTOM coil(any variation... CUSTOM/CUSTOM CUSTOM/CUSTOM 5... they are all the same coils). You can use either an Alnico 5 or an Alnico 2 magnet to fine tune it to your liking or the particular instrument. The general difference is that A2 wil have a more buttery Bass and Treble and a bit more Midrange presence.
I have found it to be the best overall pickup I have ever used and balances perfectly in output and tone with the standard/vintage model neck pickups(59/Jazz/APII/PG)
Due to the mis-matched coils you get that certain woodiness and clarity that the Antiquities possess... almost P-90ish sounding, it has the little extra push needed to get the crunchier rock tones but it stays free of the compression zone that the Customs/JB enter into... it retains the dynamics of a vintage style pickup.
The total resistance is just over 11k and I would place it on the tone chart in between the CUSTOM CUSTOM and the 59 Model which would show it as pretty much FLAT RESPONSE through the BASS MID and TREBLE which is exactly how it sounds... very EVEN... seems to really show off the natural tone of the guitar it is in.
I have had great luck with other HYBRIDS as well... for Neck pickups, the 59 mixed with either a JAZZ or APII coil sounds great! I just made a CUSTOM/JB Hybrid that is pretty cool too... next up is a Custom/Screamin Demon!
BTW... EVH was who told me about doing this... it was backstage during the Fair Warning tour and we were discussing guitars and he was saying how he loved PAF's but also loved the Duncan Custom(he had used both of those pickups in various guitars) and was torn between the 2... he got the idea to just make them both into one pickup and the result was awesome... he was atimate about using the PAF magnet because the Ceramic was too brittle sounding... this was a LONG time ago, but I remember it clearly... it's not everyday that you meet one of your guitar heros!
