Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

I'm sure it's a lining his pockets as well as an ego thing. Let's face it, EVH isn't the guitar god he once was as can be expected because of the passing of time. This is a way for him to keep his name out there and have people remember him with reverence instead of for all the junk in the press over the last ten or more years. As for the money, I don't care how rich you are, more money is always welcome, hee hee. Of course my answer is all conjecture, but there's probably a sliver of truth in there.

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

i'm a huge Van Halen fan... but the time a real signature guitar would of sold was in the mid to late 80's... if Kramer had offered a VH Baretta it would of been crazy how many would of flown out the factory... every guitarist in my highschool in 1987 was trying to get VH sounds and trying to make their Kramers look 5150-ish..

these days Ed can do what he wants... his new EVH stuff is quite costly but it is well made... not many will sell out of the fact it just costs a hell of a lot and it makes you wonder how many VH fans have that type of money... the EVH guitars my local dealer has are $3400 each... same price for a half stack of the new 5150III... which in Canada $3400 is a lot! i'm sure they are wonderful but i can't afford them... wish i could...

i say the more gear he designs and releases the better... i like gear and if he wants to design and release stuff it is always welcomed...

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

Why the hell not??? :D

I guess like a lot of stars, Eddies no longer burns as brightly as it used to, but he has more than paid his dues, and as you state, the products are pretty good! It's not like he has put his name on any old rubbish...

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

When EVH starts endorsing products that are clearly shoddily built and sup-par I will consider the merit of this discussion.

I am not a particularly strong EVH fan, but as has been said he has more than paid his dues, and the gear is quality equip. When he starts endorsing SX, Behringer, and Bugera, then I´ll start getting skeptical ;)

You should have been in high school when they came out. Holy smokes, was there a fuss over this unbelievable new guitar player! I went to school in Irvington NJ (Jerry Lewis and Queen Latifah as well, hee hee) and we had a kid who looked EXACTLY like Eddie, hair, overalls no shirt and all. It was eerie.

If those guitars would have come out in the late seventies, holy smokes, sales would have been unreal. They could have put out a piece of plywood with VH paint and every kid would have had to have one. He had a different looking guitar with every album and the new models would have been flying off the shelves and the collectibility factor today would probably have been huge. Ah, 20/20 hindsight, haha.

One does wonder why Eddie didn't do this back then in the late 70s... I do know from reading interviews he purposely didn't want other people getting his sound, so maybe that's why. I figured the time he was with Kramer though he softened that stance. Would have been great to get a VH Baretta. Still not sure why Kramer didn't pursue this on their own without Eddies permission. It's not like he is suing Ernie Ball or Peavey for still using Eddie's designs for their own profit.

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

Odds are good nobody was throwing money at him to make signature guitars back then.

Now he's gettin on in years and the 30+ rocker crowd finally has money to support the man.

I think it's cool. I'd like a line of custom guitar products, they wouldn't even have to pay me much..

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

I will say this the new pickup was a bargin to me. I would have paid double for it for two simple reasons first there is no doubt in what you are getting it is a duplicate of his pup he used and second it sounds freakin awesome! Well worth the $150 it cost me. Any Custom shop pup will run in this price range so i think the EVH company is sellin it at a fair price.

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

Eddie would still be a guitar god if he'd release a good album. Or even a half decent one. Look at Slash.

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

The products aren't bad, just a touch more in price. I really think the coolest thing he came out with was that replica guitar. Not so much to buy, because of the huge price tag, but it is a really cool museum piece.

I would hope we get one more good original recording out of the guy yet.

i think evh still is and always will be a "guitar god" he set the guitar on fire(pardon the pun) from style to how guitars are built to tone, etc.
Even though i was not even born when he was on top of his game i still really admire the guy for what he accomplished ! Must have been a very exiting time when he hit the scene.

i have a porn star sized hard on for one of those replica guitars! Probably never have the funds for one but if i did i would buy one!

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

out of all the guitars that have passed thru Eddies hands the one i wet my pants over for was a one off early Kramer Baretta style he posed with for a 1984/85 era Magazine ad. "Quite Simply The Best Guitar You Can Buy Today".... It was a white Baretta style with a rosewood board neck and black hardware...

the guys over at Kramer.com said it was a one off prototype, and the early 1984 era production Baretta's are slightly different... they said that white one from the ad is really a lot more close to the headstock and body spec's of the 5150 custom guitar then any of the Baretta's...

but yat he Frankie reproduction my local highend shop has is amazing to look at... they want $33,000 Canadian for it!!! Up close like most Fender relics it looks odd... you can tell in some ways it's a reproduction... but still very cool! I like how you can still see the wood grain thru the thin spray can paint!

The Kramer that he was holding in those ads are referred to in the Kramer lover community as Holy Grail models. There were a limited amount run with that exact shape and headstock and they are hard to come by and usually sell at a premium.
Id LOVE to have one!! I have a Baretta, but would love to have a grail model!

from what they said over at Kramer.com that one was a one-off made for Eddie.... they also said Eddie gave that one to a tech or roadie

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

My Baretta came with a JB. I have a 598 in it now. My pacer Imperial has the JB/jazz set it came with stock. My Focus 6000 has a custom 8 in it and it just ooozes 80s metal tones.
I LOVE Kramers!!

Back to the orig topic, I hate that all of his signature stuff is so expensive, but at least it is quality. Ive not had the chance to play an EVH amp or the new guitar. The guitar is expensive, but it does sound like they put in alot of development.

Re: Is eddie just linihg his pockets with the EVH products?

For years people were cashing in on his popularity and name with their VH repaints and such, so why shouldn't Ed do it?

And Kramer did do a few of the lesser models (Striker and whatnot) with EVH-ish stripes (I had one - black and green over pearl white body and flourescent orange stripes on a natural maple head), but he may have drawn the line in the contract about copying his designs for the other models. An artist loses his identity when "everyone" has what he has.

I had a black Baretta that I bought used sometime between 85-87, then I traded it for a Kramer American Liberty, a guitar I wish I still had. In 90 or 91 I traded the Liberty for a 73 Marshall halfstack and Sound City straight bottom cabinet.
