Is It True That Seymour Once Owned David Gilmour's Famous 0001 Stratocaster?

JOLLY

I read an article that stated Seymour Duncan once owned this famous Fender Stratocaster with the serial number 0001. I know it wasn't the first Strat ever produced, as it's a 1954 model. I just wondered if what I read was true. Supposedly, and I quote:

"This guitar was originally owned by Seymour Duncan and sold to Pink Floyd's main equipment coordinator and guitar technician Phil Taylor for the meager sum of $900 in the early 70's. David Gilmour purchased the guitar in the late 70's for an unknown sum that allowed Taylor to purchase a house soon afterwards."

Is this true? I'm sure you'd know the low down on this story Evan, or could at least find this out from Seymour himself. If this story is true, does Seymour ever kick himself in the butt and regret selling it?

That's pretty interesting, Jolly. I've got a picture of the same Strat in your post, it's in a Guitar book by Tony Bacon. I've always heard that the first Strat went to Eldon Shamblin, of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys. He hated the Trem. Bridge, so he blocked it off. ( This was in the book I mentioned ). Anyone know if this is true??? :)

59paul, That may possibly be true about the first Strat. It seems as I recall reading something like that before.

Here's what else I got on the Gilmour 0001 Strat:

"Vintage guitar experts feel the Stratocaster was created between March & May 1954 though the guitar is dated June 1954 at the bottom of the neck. Those who have seen the guitar feel it was a custom order from the Fullerton, California shop. The guitar has an unusual look. The finish appears to be a faded Olympic White. The pickguard is anodized gold, which makes it different from typical Stratocasters - the pickguard is darker than the finish on the body. The guitar also has a customized gold plated tremolo and output jack. The tuners are standard chrome. The pickup covers, volume and tone knobs remain white. They haven't yellowed over the years."

I'd heard that it was owned by Ernie Ball, but then again that was from a magazine...

I think Bill Carson actually got most of the "first" Strats... like prototypes in their final form.

On the old forum someone announced that the FIRST EVER production strat had been found... and that George Fullerton himself verified it. The owner's son came onto the board and confrimed it as well. It was designated the "Pro-1" Strat or something like that.
