Is My Daddio crazy?

Son Of Monster

and Son of Charlie
So here's the scenario. My Pops is a bass player, he's a little out side the box, somtimes I wonder if he knows where the box is! Anyways, he just got from a friend a Squire Strat, that has a Alder body, Maple neck and fretboard, and is roughted for a humbucker in the bridge, single in the middle and a single in the neck. So here comes what might be the crazy part. He wants to put a SH-13 Dimebucker in the bridge, and a SHR-1 in the middle and the neck. I'm thinking thats a whole lotta rails. Is he on to some over the top aggressive top tone? It would be cool if I can help him, thats where your knowledge comes in. Any ideas? Should I stop him. Has he lost his mind? He is a bass player. Thanks for any ideas.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

If he wants huge brutal tone out of that guitar, convince him to go with the Custom/Cool Rail/Hot Rail.

To me, the Dimebucker is a bit harsh on the top end, whereas the Custom has a big heavy tone, but voiced really good.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

I am one of those crazy old dudes too. Check out the squire I modified for my son in my profile. Over the years it has had quite a few different set ups. In the profile picture it has a sustainiac in the neck, duckbucker in the middle and cool rail in the bridge positions. Today is has the sustainer, ,duckbucker (w/split) and 78 in the bridge. The guitar screams when needed. When the duck bucker is split... only 3 of the six pole pieces are active so you can have the "top" or "bottom" three strings running with what ever other pickup you select.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Yes, Monster is my Daddio! I've gotten one idea. Anybody else have any ideas? I know he wants it to be the most BRUTAL, AGGRESSIVE tone. He likes things, as he puts it "gross"!

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

i know the frank gambale signature model yamaha had hot rails in the middle and neck ... paired with a JB in the bridge .. so its not out of the realm ... i agree a custom (or a custom custom) would kill in the alder strat bridge

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Hey S.O.M.

The most aggressive and brutal pickup we make is the Blackouts Metal, which is a full-size humbucker. Then he could put Blackouts singles in the neck and middle. That would be about as aggressive as we go. Of course, he'll have to change out the pots.

Please say hi to your Mom and Dad for me -- and I look forward to meeting you at NAMM.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Ok, I was just talkin to Pops, I think hes lost it. Hes talkin' about sanding the guitar down to raw. Guaging it to death. Putting like teeth marks into it. I suggested the Custom/Cool Rail/Hot Rail idea. Hes thinking about it. But he says he wants it to be "Blacker then the blackest black time infinity".

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Hi Evan,
Daddio for some reason wants passive in this guitar.? I'll tell them you said "HI". We are off to New Orleans Monday morning. Hope to see you at NAMM.

ps Thanks for the way cool grey long sleeve.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

he may wanto consider the distortion or alt 8. the dime has a butt ton of highs. he may want that though idk

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

While I think all rails would be cool, the Hot Rails will be on the darker side and the Dimebucker will be on the brighter side.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Hey SOM! Haven't seen ya lately. first off, your daddio is 'Monster' so we can't really expect too much sanity can we?

Your young - I know the power of a Dimebucker is a scary thing. He'll be able to handle it. I do agree that Squire/alder/maple will be a tad on the brightside with a Dime, but maybe that's the tone he want. I do like the 250 pot idea.

Personally, I'd put the dimebucker in the neck, maybe a JB jr. in the bridge....

PS - Evan, where's my cool grey long sleeve?

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

I have a couple of guitars that came stock with Hotrails in the neck and mid.. (Washburn MG130 Stevie Salas models) They are great for distorted lead playing but dont give up much clean tone. Would not be my choice to purchase since I like to have some versatility, but again, if he wants aggressive, these scream on leads! Id also recommend an ALT8 for the bridge instead.. The Dimebucker may be bright. If he is visually wanting all rails look and wants a super hot pup, then go with the Bill Lawrence XXL500 I think it is.. But staying Duncan, go Alt 8. Huge chunky ballsy rock tone!!

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Hey All,
Back from NOLA! I know Pops wants it to be dark, chunky, and ballsy. He is not looking for a great clean tone at all. He wants it real heavy without drop tuning. Any help, helps.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

I dont think many people would describe the dimebucker as dark and ballsy.

Im going a little left field here, but if Monster's relationship with Seymour Duncan stretches to custom pickups then maybe a Scott Ian El Diablo would fit it with the rails look and the sound.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

^^ this

the dual-Alnico 2 rail magnet originally designed for Tony Iommi? yeah it's the most metal pickup ever.

He oughta just get three of those.

Re: Is My Daddio crazy?

Hmmm, would the Scott Ian El Diablo and a Hot Rail in the neck and middle position be really dark and heavy as a really heavy thing (little SYL humor)? I will talk to him about that.
