lol i have a spider 2 150 watt half stack and fell in love with the insane amp setting ,it was the best bang for my limited buck.i have a raging hard on for a mesa road king but have not worked up the nerve to rob a bank to afford it.the line 6 was less than 800 bucks out the door and was wondering if any one else had any experience with this amp?im a metal player.and have 2 les pauls and 2 fender strats

If you like it, that is all that matters. The average listener can't tell the difff between a Dumble and a First act.

You just summed up in one simple sentence what I haven't been able to put words to for years now.

on another note, I doubt I'd like the insane setting, but I dig line 6 myself.

I guess the average listener might not know much
but you get a gorgeous sound and a sweet song in front of the right girl and she won't know why she is melting, she just will.

I'll tell you why it's a piece of crap: dynamics. Sure, at bedroomlevels with inexperienced ears, it's hard to tell from a real amp and fun to fiddle about with all these different sounds and options.

But then you've got to take it out and play with others, either a jam or a gig and if you have the misfortune that somebody brings a good tube amp, your sound will just disapear as soon as there are more people than just you playing.
And no, this has nothing to do with volume or EQ settings, it just lacks the dynamics to cut through the mix.

Back when my 1x12" 50 Watt split channel JCM800 was in one piece and stock, I took it to some youngsters who were trying to form a band to listen, give pointers and play along for a bit. One of the (sorry excuses for) guitarists had a Line 6 2x12" combo and laughed at my little combo and the fact that I had to use a little distortion pedal with it.
But only a few chords after I joined in, I could see him loose his mind, squatting down in front of the amp, adding volume .. I'm not the kind to laugh back into his face, but he sure would have deserved it !

But technology is catching up fast, the Vox modelers for one can be heard a lot better in situations with real amps and who knows where we'll be in a couple of years ?

I still think modeling things are great headphone amps and direct recording gizmos, but real situations call for real amps, period.

The bottomline is that this is not a line sicks forum ..

Re: is my line 6 a piece of crap?

thank you vin,and your right low volume ,the signal is very full ,havnt played with any one else with it ,and i do so badly want a mesa all tube road king, but due to budget restraints and lovly but expensive wife ,lmao ,just could not at this time get the mesa.lol

Re: is my line 6 a piece of crap?

Don't hit yourself in your head for it bro. :) Sounds to me like you have a great amp for a great price for your situation.

I don't know how things are price wise where you live, but here in the Netherlands, the new digital amps seem de loose value very quick. If you really have your heart set on a nice tube amp, you might want to think about selling the Line 6 now and buy something that won't loose its value so much while you save up for the Mesa you want.
Some of the early Valvestates are dirt cheap and take pedals really well in case you don't care so much for the distortion that comes from the amp (which already is very suitable for metal if you ask me).

Re: is my line 6 a piece of crap?

The Spider is not my favorite L6 amp, but it's not horrible. It's a matter of taste. If you like it, it's good. End of story.

that sums it up; I have played through horrible equipment and chicks still dig it, parties still went off. All in the eyes of the beholder. we were playing to the Alice in Chains and RATM crowd so the gear worked, which was what mattered.

My buddy got one of those line6 2x12 spiders and I had fun with "insane" setting - sounded good. sounds great at bedroom levels. if you like it, then fine. I am sure people will chime in though about quality control which is my main worry with those amps based on feedback on Harmony Central and stories people told me about this amp on this forum - do a search, educate yourself and and come to your own conclusions. Good luck!
