It's been a long time since I plugged into one, but from memory, the 5150 II would not be my choice for going after any of EVH's early tones. To me, the 5150 sounded closest to 'judgement day' off F*U*C*K.
That said, there was a guy who posted some clips up here using a 5150 combo (dunno if it was the II or not) running into a marshall cab, and he got pretty close. That guy had really put some time in getting his Ed manouvres down, though, and could probably do a decent Ed impression through a crate practice amp...
