True. First you have to be out all night, fall off the stage in the middle of set 5, climb back up and persevere until they run you out of there with vacuum cleaners at 3 A.M. and, somehow, make it home, up the steps on 2nd or 3rd attempt, win sweety pie's heart by explaining that it's OK - you ain't f*cked anybody or killed anybody, and maybe you'll make it as far as the sofa, if she'll let you. And then, 2 hours later you need to wake up on your feet, running back out to the car because you forgot to bring your guitar in, and, if you're lucky, it'll be the coldest night of the year, the house is nice and warm, and you're dumb enough to drag it out of the case and park it on the guitar stand and when you finally start wobbling about, mid afternoon, you'll see that the guitar now has finish checking. But all these conditions have to be right. There are no short cuts.

Since :friday: is prominently a part of of historically valid and accepted means of achieving finish checking, I thought that sharing this information while :friday: would be appropriate. Unfortunately it also caused me to forget about the warning that sweety pie is quite likely to take her vengeance upon you at an early hour with yet another vacuum cleaner attack. And also, while finish checking on a 20+ year old instrument is considered patina, on a 2 year old instrument it is called damage. Integrity and caution, gentlemen.

Re: Is Relic-ing a Relic?

I tend to agree with the sentiment of guitars showing their age over time through (ab)use. It adds to the character of the instrument. Each knick, scratch, ding, dent, etc, has a story to tell - a story about where the guitar has come from. The imperfections are also a clue into the guitarist - how he plays, how he cares for his instrument. I personally don't buy into the relic look unless it's from natural aging.

Re: Is Relic-ing a Relic?

Ive got a reliced guitar...did it myself...its a mexican strat/poly finish....and it was NOT going to "age" over 30 years. The guitar also only cost me about $250; its my favorite guitar, and I'll take it over my Gibson anyday. The relic thing is cool to me, but i do agree that if you buy the guitar pre-reliced thats pretty dumb. I also agree with a bunch of other guys that I just feel more comfortable with something that isnt "jewlery"... where you can gig with it without thinking to much about what could happen.
