....this is a spin-off (pun intended) thread from my last one whereas this question was asked by myself and another member....

Is this true and who can provide verification yes or no?

Clear skies ahead...think SoCal weather.....

Hey! Look, Wattage, it's Punky Meadows!

Definitely not. A Jazz with A2 sounds very different.

What i´ve heard the Alnico 2 pro and Pearly Gates were originally developed for Bill Gibbons of ZZ TOP

The only real similarity I found is that a APH1 bridge with A5 sounds very close to a 59 bridge.

Well these are much different opinions than were posted in the other thread. I really can't imagine SD changing the name of a pu entirely based on a magnet swap...note the Custom series. Searching for the truth so that those of us who do swap pu's from time to time don't unintentionally duplicate efforts. Thanks to those who chimed in, and keep them coming.

Yes, it's me, Punky.

The PG was not made for the Rev. It is an approximation of the pickups in his 59 LP. More of a tribute model than a signature one.

Jazz aren't PAF's; different wire gauge. Takes more than low output to be a PAF.

True dat. I was just comparing that the A2Pros are PAF based and the Jazz isn't and even with a magnet change it doesn't get in the ballpark.

Kind of a half thought posted. Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Hi,

What's your source?

I mean from what I understand, you claim that Jazz pickups are not would with #42 AWG. Correct?

#43?

When making hybrids using Jazz coils, it always seemed like #42 to me. But then again, there is also #42.5...

???

The insulation (from what I remember very vaguely) was not Plain Enamel but Formwar. I could be wrong tho.

Here are some ancient threads about this:

And here is a great source of information about the origins of JB and Jazz (particularly the TeleGib):

http://www.ainian.com/jb4.html

Notice that it says: "... I found the wire at a motor repair shop and ended up with two different rolls of wire for winding the coils. I used the heavier gauge to wind the neck pickup also because I had only a small amount. I used the finer wire to wind the bridge pickup because I could get extra turns on the bobbins for increased sustain, harmonics and output."

If you have a particular source, I really would appreciate it.
