Is the ground wire really necessary? I have a JB in a strat, ground wire has come undone, wondering if its at all dangerous or gonna be downright terrible to play?

I cant imagine there would be THAT much hum through distorted marshall.

it'll buzz like crazy when you arent touching it, worse under high gain

If stray electricity has not got a path to ground from the strings to the bridge to the jack socket to the amp to the AC socket, IT WILL TRAVEL THROUGH YOUR BODY.

Back up a sec ... what "ground wire" are you talking about? You mentioned a JB in your post ... are you talking about the bare (shield) wire coming out of that? Or are you talking about the one that connects the guitar's electronics to the trem claw?

In either case, yes you need both.
