Is the JB/Jazz combo still the benchmark for versatility?

Re: Is the JB/Jazz combo still the benchmark for versatility?

The Custom 5 still doesn't have a sparkly top end. The Screamin' Demon is somewhat better in terms of having some top end, but (for me) its bite still doesn't make for good cleans. Both are much more versatile than the JB, but neither would make my top 5.

In terms of non-vintage output humbuckers that have nice cleans, I prefer the 59/Custom as well as what I've heard of the PA-TB3B and Pegasus.

I can't say enough about the SH-6N in the bridge with an A5, and short hex screws in the coil closest to the neck. Great vintage tone wired in parallel (clean and dirty) and a beast when wired in series.
It's interesting, because the SH6n with an A5 is essentially an underwound JB. I'd imagine the hex poles smooth the high end a bit more though.

Try imagining it with a polished A4 instead 😎

No, at 43AWG, the SH-6N is more of a somewhat under-wound Custom. The short hex poles tighten the low end and better emphasize pick attack.

I replaced my JB with one and can tell you that it sounds nothing like a JB.

Though don't take my word for it; try it yourself. Even just stock, but I think it's better with an A5 and have been told it kicks butt with an A8. I would try both orientations. Going with the short hex route with the slugs nearest the bridge might just be gravy (or not, YMMV), but for me it was icing on the cake.

The SH-6N with an A5 magnet in the bridge would make an interesting bridge pup
