Is there a market for this?

Okay, the old JTM45/plexi-ish Edana has proven to be quite popular. What do you think the market would be for a similar sized amp, but in cathode biased (pseudo-class a) but something more in the Matchless Clubman vein? (no EF86, just 12AX7's) I am going to build one, using the same trannies as what are in the Edana, but I'm going to use a matchless lightning type circuit.

And, it would be priced identical to the Edana.

Is there a market for this? You're going to loose a bit of perceived volume on paper, but I'm not sure in the real world you'll hear any real volume difference.

Or stick to what I know and shut up. I'm in a very energetic mode now that my wait list backlog is going to be cleared up soon.

Reverb or no Reverb?

no reverb. I'm not convinced these amps need it. Reverb is a nice effect, but the only amps that I reallly like reverb in are fender blackfaces. It seems to detract from the circuit on other amps (I.M. not so H.O.)

Re: Is there a market for this?

I need to sneak into your dreams and plant the seed for a gain monster :D

Re: Is there a market for this?

Hey, I know what you look like, no sneaking into my dreams.

Re: Is there a market for this?

HHmmmmm....dunno :dunno:

The newer Clubman uses an EF86; is that just something you don't want or do you not like it with the Franklin circuit???

Re: Is there a market for this?

Hmm..I'm sure there would be *some * interest for this amp, Scott..

but I think a 6v6 Plexi (2 tubes...18-20-ish watts) would be better received? (IMO)......perhaps include a tube rectifier (for JTM-ish tone) with an option to switch it out of the circuit (i.e. to a SS rectifier), to get it into Plexi mode...pop a G12H or a GB25 in the 1x12 version....

Re: Is there a market for this?

I like Zerb's idea. :D

There might be some interest. Can you build one before the Dallas Guitar Show? You should've gotten a booth and brought a few up. There's your audience.

Re: Is there a market for this?

...Not really a direct answer to your question, but there seems to be a buzz for lower watt tube amps. I'm hoping to someday find a 10-15w class a 1-12 or 2-10 w/reverb and trem. Sort of like a scaled down deluxe reverb in a body and weight of a Blues Jr...I also like JeffB's 6v6 plexi idea-very cool!

As for your original question, I'd say A new take on a Lightning would be a cool venture for sure. Go for it!

Scott, how much do you normally charge for a custom amp?

Just wondering ;)

Re: Is there a market for this?

Personally I'd love a Matchless type amp. That said, I'm not actively persuing buying one. I'm pretty active in the LA studio scene and I see a fair amount of Matchless, Bad Cat, etc being used by studio types, but I probably still mostly see Fenders, Marshalls, and Mesas in the general populous...if you base it on this forum it seems 90% of the earth just wants ubergain. :)

Re: Is there a market for this?

I would say that there could be a market for it but I would also say that having reverb would make it even more appealing to even more people. There are a lot of guys in the world have like reverb...even if it was just an option that cost extra.

That's why I asked about verb or no verb. I was thinking of you Christian. This amp with verb sounds right up your ally!!

Re: Is there a market for this?

How many amps have you played that had verb and no verb options? On every one I've touched the verb was a bit of a tone suck.

Re: Is there a market for this?

I've had a handful of amps that didn't have reverb & sounded great...it's not a deal killer for me as long as the tone is full & round.

PLUS...I have an H&K Replex that does a fine job:wink:

Re: Is there a market for this?

No help from me.

Personally, I'm still trying to justify my GAS for a Franklin. I know I would like it, but I can't see spending the money for the type of playing I do.

Meh, maybe one day....
