is there a "reference" pup?

I'm thinking of things like studio monitors where it is supposed to reproduce exactly what's there...no color, no added emphahsis, even response across the board, etc. Not necessarily good sounding but necessary for engineers and sound guys.

With most pups, I think they are made to produce a certain sound or emphasize certain frequencies and not "natural".

Is there a pickup used for testing that SD uses to pickup the true tones of a guitar that sets the benchmarks for tweaking into other models??

You should look at the Ultrasonic Reference Series. They were designed by Bill Lawrence and produced in Germany in the 80's. They are hard to find but they are almost completely transparent. They also come in a number of different output ranges.

59B/Jazz N gets my vote. And you won't be disappointed with the tone either.
It's a nice neutral set that sounds balanced across the board. A5 pickups are what you want though, because they have mids set at noon, while the bass and treble is around 7.
