Is There A Sd Pickup To Get Zakk Wyldes Sound

I've got a Ibanez RG7620 7 string and want to get a pick up that'll get my sound in the region of Zakk Wylde, as i've always used SD pickups i'd prefer to stay away from the EMG actives unless thats the only way - is the 7 string SD invader an option?

If you want to stey away from actives then the Bareknuckle MIRACLE MAN is supposed to be hte bees knees for the Zakk sound.

Using the large ceramic magnet from a Duncan Distortion in a Duncan Custom can get you close.

My ear says that the emg's are a pretty mid-spiked pickup. So if you want something like that you might look for a really hot ceramic pickup that has a spike in the mids, rolled off highs and dipped bass for control in a high gain situation. The only duncan I know of thats' like that is the Black-out Metal version. Active of course, so you'd have to find somewhere to put a 9 volt battery. The dimebucker is more of a spike in the treble--most of the Duncans are going to be up in the higher registers for clairity. I would stay away from the Invader for that tone probably.. I will +1 on the DD though! Great tone for that metal vibe! Plus just enough top end to let the top end give you harmonics you want for Zack type stuff. I tried one in my SG through a Mesa Stilletto. The more gain you give it the more it shines, and always stays tight it seemed. See my recent post on the DD review: SG to an Stilletto ;-)

Zakk uses active EMGs in a Les Paul. You'll hardly get close in a basswood RG with a Custom or a Miracle Man. What you need to get even in the ballpark is a set if Blackouts if you want Seymour Duncans. You have to go active.

EMG actives are a big part of his sound, though I'd guess blackouts would be pretty close in that regard, never played them though. I had a few guitars in the 90's with EMG's and they are good pups, just a pain to install.

That said, a 7 string Ibanez with what, a basswood body ?, is not going to give you Zakk's traditional tone which isn't just about the pups but about the guitar.

Its just like you could how you couldn't put some vintage slightly overwound singles into a LP and expect to sound like SRV.

Pickups don't produce tone on their own, they are part of an overall system thats made up of the neck construction, wood type, scale, type of strings, how you play, your amp, etc etc




You could however try painting a bullseye on your 7 string which no doubt helps with the Zakk tone (or so says the marketing dept!) LOL

Definatly good points! Although I'll add, there may be certian qualities about a player that you want to aquire-chunk, scream, open-ness or a great clean sound, but never try to sound like "them". You are a musician--sound like you. Add certain qualities if you like and we can definatly all learn from each other and the pro's-but when it comes down to it, your a fake if you "sound like someone else".

I use a Dimarzio X2N7 in my Rg7321.

It's not really a Zakk tone, but it is in the ballpark.
Much bigger low end, and more power than the EMGs. No mud.
Does the squeelies effortlessly.
Here's a clip of that guitar. Not really zakk style, but has high gain rhythm and lead tones on it.

In a Les Paul, a Bareknuckle Miracle Man as mentioned above will get you VERY close to that kinda sound.

I'm not sure how close it'd get in a Basswood RG, but I bet it'd still sound great

Not so much his OD as any OD, (Boss style is what the MXR is based on) into a loud JCM800, use chorus and rotovibe for the modulation sounds, a Jimi wah for a little more thickness than the regular crybaby and I think a SD Distortion in your guitar would actually get you right in the ballpark.

What's your current amp situation?

i own his over drive, amazing pedal but since i dont play music like him i cant really tell you if it would help. i use it as my low gain sound on some songs, and as my super hi gain tone when combined with my big muff. trust me, that box rocks regardless of whether it has his tone or not

Are the pickups in your guitar Dimarzios?? Blaze 1 or 2?

Trey from morbid angel gets some great tones (for Death metal anyways...) with his universes.

If it's a stock RG7620, the pups are the "New 7s". There's some confusion on the web as to it having the Blaze models, but it doesn't. I used to have one of those guitars, and I kinda miss it.

Thanks for all the advice, i guess i was trying not to get his sound exactly - as you said its the guitar materials, amps and the important one - the player himself. Ive got a 6 string RG550 with a JB Trembucker and a screamin demon in the neck position - sounds beautiful, a **** load of clarity and very full sounding lead, what i wanted to do with the 7 string was make it more of a riff guitar leaving the lead to my RG550 and Zakks riffing sound was one of the best i'd heard in a long time so if i change my question a little from the orignal post i put in can you guys suggest a good SD 7 string pick up with plenty mid and bottom which also 'hears' the low B string well and makes the ibanez tight riff guitar?
