is there a way to swap slugs with screws??

Re: is there a way to swap slugs with screws??

On a Gibson humbucker, the holes formed into the slug coil bobbin are the same diameter all the way through. On the the screw coil, the holes in the bobbin are wide enough at the top to accommodate the screw head set so that it just protrudes above the upper surface of the bobbin. The remainder of the screw hole is only wide enough to accept the threaded portion of the polepiece screw.

Just curious, why would you want to? Would it make a real noticable difference in tone?

Slug bobbin holes are 3/16" all the way down. Your only hope of replacing the slugs with screws is to put wood putty or something in the holes and drill for the screw width.

If you want to make the pickup 12-slug, you would have to drill the screw bobbin holes out to 3/16" all the way through.

Yes. Even moreso than changing screws does. Slugs have a lot more metal mass than screws, and also are made from alloys that are better conductors for magnetism. Screws have mechanical complications like hardness that are much less of a worry for a slug.

Replacing screws with slugs makes the pickup louder and gives more midrange and bass. Also affects attack.

I take it that is why it is customary to split to the slug coil?

Re: is there a way to swap slugs with screws??

Depends on the guitar, choice of which coil to split to often depends on which will have correct phase with other pickups.

Ibanez usually splits to the screw coil.

Also, position affects tone, closer to bridge is brighter/thinner, and that applies when splitting as well.

Makes sense.

You can use the thicker DMZ hex screws like the Super D/2/3 and Evos have (or Invader caps) in the slug holes. With these you will have to raise the coils off of the baseplate with a spacer under the magnet and taller side spacers. The screws will protrude from the top of the pickup otherwise. No big deal if you know what you're doing with a pickup apart. I would NOT recommend doing any of this to a n00b.
