Is there a way to wire a 5-way strat switch to work like a 3-way

why don't you just buy a 3-way switch?

You could probably bridge the position 1-2 and the 4-5 terminal lugs together. A simple continuity test would tell you which lugs those are.

because i can't find a 3-way blade switch that works/fits properly in my rear-mounted guitar. the face of the guitar, where the switch protrudes through it too thick. i don't have the original switch that did fit properly.
hard to explain.

The type of three-way CRL switch used in a Telecaster (and, for that matter, older Stratocasters) is exactly the same dimensions as the stock CRL five-way switch.

It ought to be possible to file away the "stops" on a five-way to convert it to three-way. Far easier to take the advice already offered above. Buy a three-way switch of the same make and model as your original five-way. Wire it like a modern Telecaster.
