Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB? What gain setting will make it start to distort? Can it handle metal, hard rock and blues?

Do a search on the JB..There should be gobs of info on it..

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

It'll do all of those styles with aplomb. The JB pushes an amp pretty hard, it distorts my BF Bassman with the volume up at around 4.

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

the JB can do all you mentioned. great pup in my opinion, very versatile as well.
hmmm as for the gain settings, it would really depend on ur amp.

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

Great sounding pickup. Extremely versatile. The amount of gain to distortion depends on the amp, but it doesn't need much.

I'm sure people will bring a lot of info into this post, but there's tons of information about the JB already on this site... just look around for it.

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

very tight sounding..cutting high-mids, pushes an amp hard, but when cleaned up with the volume control..its clean tones are magnificent too

Can the JB handle drop d tuning and other low tunings?

Just about every member on this board!!

Anyway, it is an EXTREMELY versatile pickup and it'll do whatever you want it to pretty much. Only turnoffs I have with it is for the heavier rock and into Metal the upper mids can get a tad bit overkill, especially in conjunction with the very airy bottom end.

I tune in D and the JB sounds great through my Bogner Ecstasy. It pushes the gain, stays tight and gives it a nice roar in dropped tunings. It doesn't have the biggest bottom end though but in a band situation it cuts and crunches like a mofo.
It's lead tone just sings and does shred very well.
I wouldn't call the cleans magnificent but ok.

What style of music do you play and what amp do you use if I may ask?

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

you better ask yourself what the JB cant cover.

very tight bass response, cutting heights, it can be a bit shrill if in a very bright guitar, but IMO it's perfect for downtuning

Re: Is there anybody here who has experience with the JB?

i have one Jb trembucker in my ibanez, basswood body, maple neck, floyd rose trem, regular tuning. has a great distortion tone, clean isn't the best I've heard but it still sounds really nice just isn't quite the right tone compared to the peavey. I use my Jazz/n or my hot stacked strat bridge in the mid position for the cleans. Also sounds alright split but again not as good as the peavey.

now to the peavey... i have a Jb regular spaced in a peavey firenza with a basswood body, rosewood fingerboard, and a fixed bridge in drop c# and it sounds extremely good. Perfect distorted tone with alot of bite. Cleans sound super through the JB it is a perfect tone for me. The JB split sounds great as well. has the beginning guitar sound of "story of the year- anthem of our dying day".

I can't recommend the Jb enough but you need to work with it a little bit and find the sweet spot.

I play through a Samick Sm-10 40 watt amp and through a GFX-707 Guitar effects processor which I rarely use. I play a Hohner Rockwood Strat copy. I like Melodic rock like Queen, Deep Purple, 80's metal like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Megadeth. I like a pickup to have some bottom end , lots of midrange and treble.

All of the above. Plus: It's SD's #1 selling bridge humbucker. Lew
