is there much difference between a Hendrix and a reversed Ant. Surfer?

I'm trying to solve a layout problem caused by the rather triangle shaped extension on the lower bobbin on the older style single coil pickups, in this case the Hendrix. I think can solve some of this if I use something like the Antiquity II Surfer but physically reverse it to approximate the way the Hendrix magnets are staggered (as if in a right handed guitar played restrung for lefty). The wires would remain the same (I think), I'm not trying to make it out of phase. Would this be a reasonable approximation of the Hendrix, or would it be way off?

Like I said in the original post ( https://forum.seymourduncan.com/sho...ich-are-the-warmest-sd-single-slot-humbuckers ), I'm trying to replace conventional humbuckers with a pair of single poles in half the space and a pair of single slot humbuckers in the other half. Since the single slot humbuckers have higher output, I've been advised to put the bridge one closer to the bridge, meaning there would be the triangle of the Hendrix needing room between the two pickups. A reversed Surfer would only need enough room against the cavity to have its triangle fit.

I really can't afford to have the custom shop wire a single coil with a newer bottom bobbin plate but having the Hendrix characteristics... yes, I thought of it, but my budget isn't cooperating.

Thanks for any feedback.

Two Strat pickups with normal Strat baseplates aren’t going to fit in a standard humbucker route. Your idea is part of why Duncan introduced the StagMag pickup, though the StagMag won’t make the sounds you want.

At best, I would think you “might” be able to fit one standard Strat pickup in a humbucker route if angled.

But I think you are overthinking the importance of the stagger. You have so much difference going on with the type of guitar you are using (scale, wood, etc) that the impact of pole stagger would be negligible. I have 1966 LH Strat and have tried a mix of RH and LH pickups and the stagger isn’t the bulk of the Hendrix/Strat tone.

If you are on a budget, but can at least get Surfers or the Hendrix, I would just get two Strat to humbucker adapter plates, get a Surfer or Hendrix for the neck and the Strat humbucker of your choice for the bridge. Or a Tele-sounding Strat pickup for the bridge. Duncan made one, I can’t remember which, don’t think it’s the Quarter Pound, but one of the Strat pickups was designed to sound like a Tele bridge.

If you could up your budget, I’d ask the custom shop to make two StagMags, the neck with a surfer coil and a p90-ish sounding coil, and a bridge with a Tele-sounding coil and a P90-ish sounding coil. I would wire it with push-pulls to choose which coil was on. You could come away with the most amazing Santana PRS SE there is.

Beau, the name is Twangbanger. Or get a steel backplate (from ebay or Fralin) and attach it to the back of a slightly overwound strat pickup.

Thanks for the feedback, I guess I'll just have to experiment.

It does look like the pups I just got (Lil '59 and Hendrix) will work paired in the old humbucker slot with no more than very minor mods... I suspect I'll probably spend the most time dealing with wiring mods. I'll look into the push-pull switch to see if that can help me keep from adding a more significant mod to the body.

Again, I appreciate you time.
