Hey guys. Im going to buy a 1989 squier guitar from a local craigslist-ish site. The owner says that the guitar is from 1989 but the headstock looks a little bit odd.
Could you guys help me? Because the 1989 headstocks say Stratocaster II and that guys headstock says squier STRAT *picture below*
Im buying it for 125 euros/140 dollar. Am I paying too much?

Greetz from the Netherlands!

Wikipedia has this example on display at a Hard Rock in Cairo:

Still, the "Squier" lettering looks different on your example...more bold and thick.

Yes i did see that pic before but im still a lil'bit confused, because,as you mentioned earlier, the letters look really bold. Im not sure what to think

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Plus, the RHCP version shown above has something written below the word "Squier"...probably the country of origin or a serial number, while your example does not.

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Hmm.. I'm getting nervous. The guy im buying this from is refusing to screw open the neck to show me the serial number..

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Does anyone know how to see if a Squier is legit from the inside? Like wiring, tremolo..?

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Not sure why that is supposed to make a difference. Even if legit it is a very cheap guitar. It looks usable but maximum cheap.

A photo of the back of the neck and the headplate would be useful.

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

I just sent an email to the owner asking him if he could send a pick of the back of the headstock and tremolo

The owner emailed back that he doesnt have any time this week and he's going to send them next week

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

That looks way more recent than '89.

Also, not one of the desirable Squiers, like the MIJ E-series.

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

The Squier Stratocaster II is made in Korea.

The red Squier STRAT by Fender in the opening post is made in either Taiwan or China. (It is, to all intents and purposes, the forerunner of the Affinity series.) The serial number probably begins with the letter Y or CY. It should appear on the back of the headstock.

The owner said it wasn't made in China, so that means it taiwanese?

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

1989/90 Taiwanese production should have a serial number on the rear of the headstock and with the prefix YN.

Chinese production came later and with the CY serial number prefix.

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Save up a little more and buy a better guitar. Just sayin'...

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Seems a little pricey for a used Squier. If you're cool with the price and the guitar is good, does it really matter in this case if it's counterfeit?

Re: Is this 1989 squier guitar legit?

Looks like a cheap partscaster to me. I've never seen a painted tremolo spring claw in any Squier or Fender. The knobs are not Fender or Squier. I wouldn't waste my money on that.
